Forums - Website Topics - Weekly poll - Nov. 26th

I didn't see a thread about this. I saw DKII's thread but that wasn't dedicated to the poll.

Even though it's only about 300 people I'm surprised how many people selected "just text" option. That's the option I selected.

Keep the current letter grade system (A+, B-, etc. 37 10.98%

Score out of 100% using each point. 145 43.03%

Score out of 10 using half points. 66 19.58%

Score out of 10 using whole points. 18 5.34%

Switch to a 5-star system. 20 5.93%

Don't use grades at all, just text. 51 15.13%

  337

results so far.

Any reviewer who doesn't want an inbox that is 100% hate mail will stick to text only.

Thats said, you still get a crapload of it.

Lol.. good point. But the site wants to be publicised and get traffic instead of... well forming from being a trusted and good review site...

I mean I understand their point of wanting more traffic but as a member I'd rather the site get the traffic by just being honest and writing well thought out reviews than people just looking at scores.

I went for out of 100%, it used to be the most commonly used method to rate games.

I choose 100%....even though I regret it..text only would have been a way better option..

I'm annoyed so many have chosen 100%.

The ONLY advantage I see for it is that it is easier for MetaCritic and such to add the scores into the crapfest of other review scores, which would be good publicity for the website.

However it is possible to get around this without resorting to such an "accurate" scale of 100

Read the reviews and then make up your mind about those things.

It's not a case of either/or. We can have good, honest, reliable reviews and score them. The content of the reviews doesn't suddenly become unreliable because we add a score at the end.

My point was with scored the site is focusing more on trying to get traffic right?

But think about it. The traffic you get will be from people just scrolling to the bottom of the page to see the score then signing up on the forums to either post "This score is stupid this site sucks" or "This game is awesome yeahs!!" The majority of people browsing metacritic are just looking at scores and not reading the reveiws. (Unless they see a review thats really high or really low)

Well , when you score out of 5 theres a margin for error of 20% say you wanted to give a game 90% but you have a 5/5 rating system, theres a chance they may go for the 4/5 option therefore the game suffers and is only given 80%

True, and the letter system is too open to interpretation.

Score out of 10 using half points

This is the problem with it... people think it matters.... it's not an "error of 20%" because the score is already based on opinion.

If a game here was scored 5 stars out of 5.... that's it... that's all you need to know about the score (though you should read the review) you shouldn't be trying to compare it to other reviews or saying "well that could be anything from 80-100%" A review and the score should be there to help you decide whether you want to buy (or rent) a game or not, with the 100 point scale it only hinders gamers ability to understand what games are good and what are not.

If two game that interest you are reviewed and both get 4 stars/5, you would then be encouraged to read the review to find out what aspects of which game interest you the most.

I two games that interest you are reviewed and are given scores 7.5 and 8.5 you would not be encouraged to read the review because it would have made your mind up for you, even though if you read the review you might find somthing in that 8.5 game that you would not like in the game, but the reviewer saw little problem with.
