I think you'd have to be crazy to buy the PS3 off of Sony. If Sony themselves with all their hardware gods can't squeeze a profit out of it, who else will?

We also have to remember that other companies, even if their financials are much better than Sony's, aren't exactly in a mood to take big risks due to to all the uncertainty.

All of these doom predictions for Sony is kind of funny.

People act like there is only room for two companies to make consoles.  There is pleanty of money for all 3 companies to do well.

@WiiStation360: I don't recall any generation with three players making net profits. That's not to say it can't happen... If it happens, it won't be in this gen though.

Last gen GC made profits from 3rd place.  XBox lost money from second place.

But you are correct,  MS and Sony may not be able to make up previous losses this gen.  All that matters it future profits.

Sony's biggest problem this gen is not the sales, is not making money GC was doing badly but it was still profitable for Nintendo, and they survived in the 3rd place. Sony is loosing money constantly for last 2 years and they still unable to make profit out of PS3 hardware (and software sales are not that impresive) when they deal with that, with support they got they can easily survive in 3rd place and try to fight back.

I also see the 360 is stammering over the PS3 a lot lately. I guess this 2 free games and price cut on the SKU's is really helping Microsoft this holiday season.

The 360 looks well positioned in terms of future profits, now that the RROD is behind them. The Wii too, as long as the dollar and euro don't get much weaker. As for the PS3, I don't see profits in the short/medium term. The consensus seems to be it will either have weak sales or a price cut, neither of which bodes well for profits.

It's not just because of HW sales that Sony is doomed. It's because they are all and deeply in red. With such a sales they are goner both in HW market share and profit, and their SW sales are very poor to justify their efforts, masses have no apparent interest in PS3 exclusives. And for the level of interest which potentially may be seen, HW price point halves it beyond mediocricy. So, what's the reason for Sony and their investors to keep up with futile attempts to gain some money from gaming division? Face the fact, they are completely out of touch with this market.

SONY might be more occupied with their core business, selling TV's and stuff, than with it's game division at the moment.
