Why would sony want to buy the rights to rent out movies on the PS3 when it can just put its own movies out for rent anyway and not have to bother with giving netflix their cut?  Ok, well, you might say that sony doesn't own all of the movies, but this doesn't make sense either sense sony can avoid having to give netflix a cut and just deal directly with Warner, Universal, etc if it wants to offer video rentals with movies from these studios.

NetFlix is a subscription model - you pay $9 a month for DVDs - you get unlimited streaming free. It's not about "getting the movies" - it's about the pricing structure.

Xbox also has significantly more content for rental/purchase in addition to NetFlix. (a little more in the movie rental space, but way more in the tv purchase space). The one video store element that PS3 is ahead on is movie purchases (instead of rentals) - Xbox does not offer movies for purchase yet, PS3 does.

Why wouldn't the movies come? Sony has said that they will bring the service to the EU in 2009. Why couldn't the service come? Sony owns the rights to most of the movies on the PSN anyway, and it can just buy the rights from the studios.

Its ironic that people dislike somthing when its not available to them.

I think Sony could make a minting out of this, especially if it were a subscription based model, rather than pay-per-view.
