Forums - Gaming - Multi-Disc Final Fantasy XIII On 360 Looking Likely

I think The Last Remnant using 2 discs is a sign of some kind of deal SE made with Microsoft. MS has benefited from its timed exclusivity, and they obviously didnt get that fo free - so I think licensing fees increase didnt take place this time. The same will be with XIII.

And by the way, isnt 1 blu-ray disc more expensive to produce than 4 dvds?

haven't read through the 6 pages, so i wonder how the ability to download games to the HDD will work for multi-disk games.

has anyone tried this with LO yet?

As we know from the whole Rage debacle, MS's licensing fees increase with each extra disc used for a game. Thus far, only two third party games that I know of have used two discs (the Last Remnant, soon Rage), and only games published by Microsoft have used more than two (Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon).

Just to add to this with a quote from myself:

I'm playing through FFXII some now, and I am constantly backtracking doing quests, jumping through multiple areas in minutes.

If this game was multi-disc I'd be needing to swap the disc every 1-3 minutes at points.

Now there are some ways around this, like putting much visited areas on every disc, removing the need to swap as often, but with what makingmusic said, doing this will probably increase costs, since it will require more disc space used for the same thing, so more discs for other things.

So you have to wonder if they save themselves money and make the players swap discs themselves a lot more often, or pay more to have extra discs by less swapping for the player.

Given they want to make money and FFXIII probably costs a crapload to make, I'd expect much swapping.

As with Final Fantasys VII-IX and Lost Odyssey/Blue Dragon, each disk has the whole game world on it, disc swapping is only done when the space used by cinematics such as CGI and other unique places (such as caves that are only visitable once) has been taken up. Thus you can explore the whole world in Lost Odyssey on all of the discs (however part of the continent is restricted due to story reasons ;) ).

So you wouldn't have to change discs to travel around game worlds.

The "FFVII 3 disc" justification is invalid while the "load time vs. game install" is also invalid. The bigger picture here is that developers had no other choices but CD's and cartridges during the 32/64 bit days where CD's proved to be more advantageous. Choices now are Blu-ray and DVD's where as the console industry progresses, Blu-ray has proven more advantageous. It's not as much a CD's and cartridges, but still advantages. And with the NXE, is seems that hard drive installs will be the preference at this rate on the 360 when given the oppotunity even though it's not required. So now both the 360 and PS3 has the common advantage of hard drive installation.

My only problem with installs on larger games is I'm worried they will make me install them all at the same time.  I really don't want to devote 20+ gigs of my hard drive to a single game.

Has anyone installed something like Lost Odyssey?  Does it let you install a single disk at a time instead of making you install the entire game?

I'm playing Last Remnant right now and only installed disc 1.

Xbone... the new "N" word   Apparently I troll MS now | Evidence | Evidence

a one-sided dvd is less than 20 cents to produce. A double sided dvd should cost around 50 cents. A bluray disc costs around $1-2; 3-4 dvd discs and 1 bluray disc cost pretty much the same.

^ is this thread talking about cost or convenience?

obviously ps3 more convenient with one disk. i didn't hear anything about the ps3 version costing more because of bluray format.

I don't know what these people talking about disc-swapping every 5-15 minutes are talking about...they must be smoking crack or something.

I've played and beaten FF 7, 8, and 9, and I never once had to swap backwards on any of the games, for any reason(other than restarting the game from scratch). I've also not had to swap backwards on Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, or Last Remnant(nor did I have to swap backwards when playing Diablo II)

I highly doubt I'll have to swap discs backward when I backtrack in FFXIII either.

I say most likely three discs for the 360.

"Like you know"

square enix will use some microsoft video codec like VC1 or WMVHD for the 360 which have high compression but can still produce high quality high definition cut scenes.

Swapping discs is sooo PS2 gen.
