Forums - Gaming - A Nintendo fanboy confession

Man, I got a lot on my chest that I have to say, some of it will offend but some of it has a lot of truth to it, you can take it how ever and comment with calming words or hate, I just have to say it to some one! lol there is a little summary at the bottom to if you don’t feel like reading my rant lol XD

I know I can’t be the only one who thinks this but I honestly feel the Wii is ‘now’ severely over priced. I know it has that magic price tag that makes it mainstream and people will keep paying that much because they feel that it’s a good asking price for its ‘new’ motion control experience but I don’t. From a marketing stand point there is no need for a price drop or packages that save you a lot of money, but I’m arguing value when comparing what the Wii offers to its cheaper x box 360 competitor.

I’m living in Australia and have been waiting for either Sony or Microsoft to give the better deal that would make buying their system worth my while. And 2 weekends ago I got an e mail from EB games outlining 3 xbox packages, the one I went for was for $399 I got a 60gig 360, lego Indiana jones, kung fu panda and assassins creed. I then bought that new red rechargeable controller from big W for $78 I think it was and then Viva Piñata and Forza Motorsports 2 for $20 from Target. Making my bundle of a 60gig 360, extra rechargeable remote and 5 games for $497AUS. My DVD player also broke so it was perfect timing too! XD

Now I never cared about HD gaming because I would see the games being played at the shops and they never looked that impressive and I used to think that the last gen graphic offering was all that games really needed but after getting the 360 home and putting it into a nice big HD TV (which must be better then the screens at the shops) I was absolutely blown away, especially by assassins creed. I knew it would be good but not this good, and being a game bargain hunting kind of guy I compared my experience to the money I had payed and I felt like I had stolen something, it was such a great deal! I can’t help but feel there is A LOT more going into these 360 games. And comparing the pricing of the older games to wii games and even the wii console which is now $100 more expensive then the cheapest 360 console in AUS I can’t help but feel REALLY REALLY ripped off by Nintendo. I thought I was getting a good deal when I got wario ware free with super paper Mario or ssx blur for $40 and $60 off wii fit but I was wrong. And a lot of the cheap Wii games actually suck and are still over priced when comparing value/cash.

Bargains aside, lets talk about games. I’m a huge Zelda and Metroid fan, but to fully illustrate my Nintendo fanboyism I’ll let you know I punched a kid in the face once because he was bad mouthing Nintendo. So I think it’s completely fair for me to come of the closet and admit that there is a kind of dullness to these ‘upper tier’ or ‘hard core’ Nintendo games. (Not including Mario galaxy) If I was a 360 or PS3 fan boy you could rip me to pieces for saying that but there is something honestly missing from these games, and I’m not just talking graphics. I loved exploring twilight princess and for me that was amazing, especially when I stumbled upon the ruins of the temple of time! But I can’t help but compare that experience to the amazing medieval world of assassins creed. I don’t care if I’m pressing buttons to make my character do stuff, the detail in these 360 games draws you so much further into the game then motion controls ever will.

I’ve also put hour after hour into animal crossing on the DS only to finally get bored of it and then a few months later play viva piñata and think “what on earth ever attracted me to animal crossing?” Apart from getting a higher score from collecting stuff for your house animal crossing just goes through the same character characters and lines over and over and over. At first I was impressed by the amount of character dialogue and would spend hours just talking to the characters to see what they would say but beyond that the game has no depth. Viva piñata though is full of strategy and rewards, and amazing graphics, while still being on some what of a similar ‘design you own place and collect stuff’ concept. It has motivation and goals. (some of you might not think it’s a fair comparison so that’s cool, even I don’t think its fair to compare an open ended game to a game that clearly has a point, but that’s my point, these games of Nintendo’s that are so highly praised made me think they were the best games out there! But there not!) ***feels a shock of horror. Dear Nintendo Fans: did you know that there are games better then Mario and Metroid?

And finally I will dare to say it, but I will admit that I was some how brainwashed into thinking that Nintendo was the ONLY leader in innovative game play and that motion controls are the ‘real’ next generation.(I have been living in denial) (And I have argued on here a few times that motion controls put Nintendo a little further into the next gen then 360 and ps3, I am ashamed of myself) Motion controls are awesome for party games. I had a Wii party Saturday night and it went off, I could never have a bunch of friends over for a 360 party
L unless they were all into the same game, but when it comes down to the bare bones gaming experience graphics just some how over take motion controls. Why? Because it’s now cheaper to have better graphics then motion controls. If the wii was at least $50AUS cheaper then the 360 and its games maxed at say $70 AUS I would feel the Wii is worth what it is. But all that it is, is a good party toy and a funky way to play games a bit differently. If the motion controls were really like the motion + from the word go things might be different, but their not, their under done and don’t draw you into the game any where near as much as Nintendo would like us to think they do in comparison to a beautifully made HD game. The motion control concept gets just as repetitive as pressing a button and in the end all you’re left with is a lifeless image on your screen that is in good need for a HD update. I fell for the temptation of playing wii fit but got over that quicker then any other game I’ve owned in my life and the new skate game and that snowboarding game have tempted me into trying the balance board out on them even though I know I’m going to be left wanting something more on my screen once I’m bored of standing up L

And in closing lol XD Back when the Wii was half the price of the ps3 I felt justified that I was getting into the next generation with a new and fresh awesome gaming experience that was worth the cash I was paying but now as the prices change I feel Nintendo is asking way to much from its customers as far as content is concerned. I see it from a perspective that motion controls were deemed to be worth half the price of HD gaming, and now that HD gaming costs the same I feel ripped off that Nintendo thinks my motion control experience matches my HD gaming experience when compared to price when it clearly doesn’t. I know it’s the market value of the console that allows Nintendo to keep charging such a high price but from a value for cash stand point it’s an absolute rip off.

Basically what I’m complaining about is:
- Wii was initially valued at half the price of HD gaming consoles and now that HD gaming is cheaper the wii still costs the same. This says that Nintendo’s lacklustre motion experience is worth more then the awesome HD graphics experience, which is blasphemy!
- The Wii literally is offering last generation games with updated controls for a price more expensive then current generation HD gaming!!!!

- It’s not really an argument over next gen or last gen it’s an argument over being made to pay more for what we payed less for a few years ago just because it has ‘motion’ in it
- I’m not hating on Nintendo, I still love their games and their systems and I will never stop buying them, and truth be told I will pay $100AUS for the next Zelda game or what ever good games they bring out even if their experience isnt as good as a HD one because I’m a slave! Hahaha I’m just saying the pricing vs experience sucks!

Ahh, now I feel much better XD thanks for reading! XD XD

If I were you, I'd run very fast or some guys will kill you! But it's good to be honest sometimes ;) I've also been disapointed by nintendo a few years ago, I know how you feel!

If it was fairly priced when it was launched and it's till the same machine then it must be still fairly priced.

Just because the compedators are forced to drop their prices, which is obviously in desperation, to get extra sales doesn't mean every company has to.

Sony and Microsoft have dropped prices to help themselves sell more and not because they want to give a better deal to consumers.

it would cost too much to take my nintendo problems to a shrink lol but it was nice to just get it out there, you know how some times you just need to say something and it's worth enduring the hate that might come lol

But at least I can admit I'm a nintendo fanboy that is very upset with nintendo now I know what im missing out on after cheating with a 360, oh nintendo, if only you could give me everything I needed, then I wouldnt need my beautiful 360 mistress. :(

If at first you don't succeed, you fail

Well I can understand what you´re saying but Nintendo won´t drop the price as long as the console is selling the way it is and I think that it would be nuts if they did. It just would not make any sense.

I´m glad you´re still a Nintendofanboy though, just like I am, ha ha.

Well I'm glad that you've discovered that there's more beyond Nintendo in the world. And beyond your misuse of the word "their" (it's they're), it was an interesting read for sure. (Sorry, Grammar Nazi here )

Still, you have to realize something... Nintendo does not cater to you. No, not you as in the hardcore gamer, but you as in you. Nintendo is not going to drop its price because some random person on the internet thinks the value isn't worth the admission price. The Wii continues to break sales record after sales record. I'm sure Nintendo is wishing that they could raise the price. I bet it would still sell like hotcakes and make Nintendo even more money.

So yeah, this was a nice opinion piece. It seems that you enjoy the graphical polish and more traditional gameplay of HD gaming more than the control oriented gameplay of the WiiMote thus far. I, on the other hand, find that the motion controls used in games such as Metroid Prime, Zelda, Mario, Okami, and other games enhances the experience in an enjoyable way. I actually now fumble with dual analogue FPS (I was shocked when I started playing Halo 3 XD), and find the WiiMote much more suitable for those kinds of games.

So, in the end I'm glad you found something that you enjoy and I hope that you continue to enjoy it. I will continue to do the same.

Happy gaming.

Im going to go into your reasoning, but if you're happier now than you were before thats great!

I hope you really enjoy yourself!

Wii60 is still a really cool combination and maybe taking a break from your Wii will have you apreciate what it means to you more.

Oh you silly human, of course it's fairly priced based on its original pricing and the market demand and competition etc. I even said that in a little less detail and a few different words to stop people like you telling me things I allready know but you just cant help yourself.

I'm comparing how I feel (my opinion) about the new 360 prices being cheaper then the wii prices on pretty much everything and the injustice of how something cheap has become something expensive due to market value and how its entertainment value is a rip off in comparison to the entertainment value of a 360.

If at first you don't succeed, you fail

I haven't played my Wii once since I bought my ps3. I just can't motivate myself to do it.
It's like a "why would I waste time doing this when I could be doing that?" kinda thing.

I'm really looking forward to Motion+ though.

hahaha yeah my gramma isnt the best, I agree with the controles making the experience better, I'm just sad its that last gen experience though :( now that I've experienced the HD experience. And I will never go back to dual analogue FPS, never! wii all the way for that!
