Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Cooler 65nm Xbox 360s coming soon, 45nm chips coming late 2008/early 2009

Microsoft's manufacturing partner has revealed that the new Xbox 360 with 65nm chips have been in production the last two quarters and should be on store shelves soon, but what they have also revealed is that 45nm chips should start production by sometime next year and be available on store shelves late 2008/early 2009.

"Though we're pretty confident the Xbox 360 price drop is coming sooner than "this Fall" – more like August 12th, if you want to be specific – we've had the entire Fall season marked on our Microsoft Executive Swimsuit calendar with "65nm chips" reminders. Those weary of the dreaded RROD have been looking forward to the smaller, cooler (and cheaper!) chips being included in the new systems, codenamed Falcon, but the extremely paranoid may want to hold off for the 45nm version.

"As 65nm just started production in the last two quarters, you would expect 45nm to [begin production] about 18 months from that timeframe," said the President of Microsoft manufacturing partner, Charted Semiconductor. That means production on those new even smaller and even cooler chips won't begin until late 2008, early 2009. If that's too long to hold off, take comfort in knowing that those 65nm chips have been produced for some time, and should be making their way to retail Xbox 360s soon (astronotip: Fall starts on Sept. 23 this year, so mark your various themed calendars)."

Cool deal. I wonder, with the huge savings in power the 45nm chips have - can we expect a redesign that gets rid of the power brick?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

So these won't be available for the Halo release, and probably not even the holiday season as retailers will be trying to get rid of their current stock.

Its good news for next year, but bad news for the 360 that its taken this long with how bad the situation has gotten.  It will take a while, if at all, before the perception that the 360 is unreliable goes away.

They've been in production for awhile and may turn up on store shelves anytime...  Meaning they may or may not be on store shelves before Halo 3 is released.

Should I trade my premium in now so as to still get the whole $230 dollars toward a "Falcon" elite?!
