Forums - Sony - The official Playstation 4 thread

The PS4 is not due for about 8 years now, but I have made this thread to cover some important issues. These include things like rumours about the upcoming console and what you would like to see from it.

Help I cant get my trophy card to work.

8 more years? :P I'd expect to see another Playstation within 3 ^^ They'll probably still support the good ol PStripple, but They always like to have multiple units out, so when you feel the PS2's going to stop being produced, expect the PS4 :)

But Sony says lifespan of PS3 to be 10 years, so if PS4 comes out in 3 years then for about 5 years both PS3 and PS4 will run alongside each other!

Which is the plan :) They've done it with like all they're models ^^ They still sell ps2 software my friend!!! New games come out for it quite often sadly, and when they cut the production on it, the PS3 will become they're lower model, and they'll move right to the PS4. They'll still support the PS3 of course, because when the "next gen" hits, it will be the cheaper to develop for console :P

I see what you mean people I suppose it is possible that we may see PS4 a lot sooner once PS3 price goes down. I predict we may see it sometime in 2012 or 2013

6 years between consoles. Like PS2 and PS3.

With the way they're doing right now on the PS3, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the fourth installment by 2011 :)

But let's talk about that 4th version shall we ^^

I'm predicting that it will use very similar tech that the PS3's been using. Which should result in...

Multiple Cell chips, since they scale so well with numbers :) The chips will be pretty cheap in 2 years time.

Blu-Ray drives costing them next to nothing since they've been shrinking them this whole time :P

The unit itself will be MUCH smaller by comparison to the first release of the PS3, the CPU will be consisting of multiple cell chips, and since they'll be so small by that point, it will be VERY energy efficient, put off minimal heat, and need far smaller heat sinks.

It will probably have at least a 4-8x readable blue disc drive, which will be absolutely insane for data transfer.

Possibly ship with a Solid State Hard drive, to reduce the size, power consumption, and load times.

It will support all the latest data transfer cords :P Cuz that's how Sony rolls.

Will probably have a built in Mic and or come with they're most recent build of the Eye Toy. Microsoft did pretty well by shipping a headset with each unit (although let's be honest, that headset sucks ass). Sony will want to join that club :P

The OS will be a much improved version of the XMB, it will be smooth as silk and carry all the functionality of the PS3 and much more.

Should be super cheap by comparison to the PS3 launch :P

Things that Sony should consider:

-Do not change the CPU's entire architecture again, first it was LSI Logic's R3051, then it was Sony and Toshiba's Emotion Engine, then Sony, Toshiba and IBM's Cell... Next processor HAS to be a more powerful Cell-based processor, because with that the costs will be cheaper, developers will find it familliar and the system will have BC...
-The support for devs has to be outstanding
-Do not change the disc format again, first CD, then DVD, then BR, and that is cool, but it's the 1st time that a PS console has a brand-new format and pushes it onto the market, that's the major reason why the prices are through the roof and they're losing money on every sale, next-gen they should stick to Blu-Ray and have a bigger default HDD for more digital content...
-More RAM, lots of more RAM
-They need the head-start, and with that, lots of 1st party titles to push sales until 3rd party catches up...

I get the feeling that the PS4 is gona take Sony back to the near top if they price it right. The next Wii I dont think will sell as well as many gamers especially hardcore are underwhelmed, but it will still sell good. It'll B interesting to see how M$ cope if as expected they come out with the most expensive console
