Forums - Sales - More Breaking News: Xbox 360's now drop $100.....

iSuppli teardown of the 20gb 360 in Nov 2006 was $323. Costs for the 360 are reducing at something in the region of 10% a quarter and the 65 micro processor should save $50 over the old processor.

$1 billon charge to fix 10 million Xbox "red ring of death" equates to about $100 per console.

So, if the 65 micron processor cures the overheating warranty problem, then Microsoft should save be able to make a small profit on the Falcon Premium if priced at $200.

So a pre-Xmas price cut would be in order to tempt some of those 10 million original Xbox owners who have not upgraded to get Halo.

Sony won't cut again until they can discern momentum from software sales. They aren't gaining marketshare on price alone but interestingly enough I think they are most screwed in Japan where they have neither software nor price going for them.

Thats not much of a price drop.

Agree, I think Microsoft is doing something wrong here. If I was Microsoft I would bundle Guitar Hero 2 with the core and a memory card, that would possible steal some casual gamers from PS2 and Wii. Microsoft has the Hardcore now they need the casuals.

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

The PSP had a price drop of like 30 dollars and that boosted sales... I don't understand why you guys think this won't do anything... the stores will advertise the new prices and people will buy the damn thing.

Ohh I think it will sell more, but I think that it wont sell enough more to keep themselves infront of Wii. I also think that the tard package is even more shit now.

I still expect another cut from MS before the holiday.

PSP cost 200 - now 169
360 Elite was 480 - now 450

for them to be the same thing, 360 would have had to drop around $75

agreed

like a rocket launch... you fire up the boosters first and then you push full trust.....

If this is the price drop they are offering for Christmas, I think it would attract more buyers to the ps3 that were holding out waiting for a substantial drop.

no what i'm saying is on any new XB sold right now MS is doing profit... it doesn't mean they covered their investment.... Sony is still selling at loss which means they are gaping their deficit....

then about the deficit it's like USA they might have a huge debt they are still "number one" in the world or almost.....

and it's weird that Sony is firing that many people if they are doing so well.... even in their first party studio.... and they didn't meet their expectation.....

I really don't think Sony PS3 is in a good position.... a cut would be great... but they have to make sure that the ratio between market share earned and deficit increase is worth it... and with the line up they have for the end of the year and eventual price drop on MS side... I don't see the jump happening....

I know that the cost to manufacture the 360 is less than what it's sold for. But that doesn't mean they're in good position to lower the price of the system further. You're looking at one aspect of the business and completely overlooking the costs of the other operations. Clearly, the cost of the other operations far exceeds the profits generated by selling the 360. MS could be making $300 per system, but if their XBOX division as a whole is losing billions, it becomes hard to justify lowering the revenue stream by reducing the price of the system. On the other hand, if they were losing $300 per system, but generating billions in profits, it becomes far easier to justify lowering the price of the system even further.

Now I'm not saying MS won't lower the price again, but I am saying it's gonna be more difficult to justify such a price drop after losing $2 billion last year and well over $5 billion over the last 7 years.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
