This is straight from Bloomberg:

Asian Stocks Fall, Extending Global Rout; Toyota, Nintendo Drop

Nintendo Co. lost more than 4 percent on concern demand is slumping in North America, where the company gets 40 percent of its sales.

It looks like the demand is no longer where it was one year ago.

Nope, they're wrong, last year at this time Wii sold only 288 thousand in the Americas, compared to almost 343 thousand last week



 

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

The article is taking about the demand, not the sales. The sales are clearly up, but the demand appears to be nowhere near where it was one year ago.

 Demand is not measurable on its own, you can't go up to everyone in America and ask if they want a Wii

Demand is not measurable on its own, you can't go up to everyone in America and ask if they want a Wii

 

You can estimate the demand from the sales on Ebay and such. Last year the price was hovering near 400 bucks and now it's about 250 bucks if not lower. The demand is clearly down, hence the drop of Nintendo on the stock market.

Since the Wii was sold out for the entire holiday period last year, there is no way to know what the "demand" for Wii was. The only thing to do is compare sales, which VGC helps us in doing
