mgs4. Nothing like the octocamo and having all the camo's in 90% of cutscenes as well

How does that even begin to be a technical achievement?

I've never seen anything like it before---thats how

...Do tell me what the Octocamo does that makes it that impressive, by all means

I find the ability to change to the color of any surface in the game pretty damn cool. Mgs3's camo system was a pain in the neck.

...Man you might want to go back and play Alien vs. Predator 2, that is not exactly new technology.

I liked MGS3's camo system. Pretty grounded in reality - and it worked, too, if MGO was to be believed.

Like I said, I don't know what you've played before but it was a first for me and this is an opinion thread. Alien vs predator 2...wasn't that even a PC game?

Yeah, from like 1998.

Then, the wii motion excuse conviniently works in this case as well. Octocamo is a "first" for consoles eh?

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

GTA4? Why? It's full of framerate and pop-in issues, and its graphics are not outstanding against other games on the same platform.

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

Uncharted

Gears of War 2 and GTA IV come close

...No.

Applying different textures to something isn't new. They've been doing that with costume changes for years. Hell, it was done in Metal Gear Solid 3 constantly.

If it's a matter of transparency, off the top of my head they were doing that sort of thing left and right in Metroid Prime.

Again, pretty graphics are not a technical achievement. Praise MGS4 for its storytelling if that floats your boat but don't pretend it's somek ind of technical marvel.

MGS4. No if's, and's or but's about it.

@NJ5 I think Rockstar were faced with challenges the average developer wouldn't have to deal with , such a large and interactive environment wouldn't easily high end in terms of graphics .

In that sense it's a graphical achievment.

Portal for it's.....portals (if you listen to the commentaries it sounds like it was a pain in the butt to pull off properly)

Left4Dead for it's AI director.

Currently Playing:  Saints Row 2 | Battlefield 2 | Company of Heroes

Recently Beaten: Gears of War | Super Mario Galaxy | Darwinia | MGS4 | Sam and Max Ep. 4, Portal | Mirror's Edge | Uncharted | Mass Effect

Looking Forward to: Alan Wake | Splinter Cell : Conviction | The Last Guardian | Batman: Arkham Asylum | SMG2 | Mass Effect 2 |

Portal is pretty much the only game I would put on the same plateau as Wii Sports in terms of technical achievements for this console generation. Good show, sir.

Just thought of a couple of others nobody mentioned...

Dead Rising was pretty revolutionary, because up to that point no one had put that many independently acting NPCs on the screen at once. Furthermore it was also impressive that you could basically pick-up and use anything you saw around you.

Halo 3 honestly had some pretty impressive technical acheivements as well. The way the matchmaking, movie making, forge and online community were all brought together and so seemlessly polished, you have to admit its at least somewhat impressive. Oh also I believe it was the first console game with 4 player online co-op within the main campaign.

Finally, i'll mention far cry 2 and Assasin's Creed here, because in order to have an open world game be that pretty and run that smoothly, you have to be doing some pretty impressive things with your engine. Far cry also wins bonus points for their work on fire burning in game, not to mention the incredibly impressive map editor. For as much as i have mixed feelings about Ubisoft, they have some damn talented coders f'sho.
