This isn't a prediction. They are just saying that they will support it longer, not that popularity will continue.

All sony needs to do is ensure backward and forward compatibility on the next console.

Sony has already mentioned they expected to releease ps4 around 2011 (optimistically) and plan to fully support both consoles for their full planned life (ps3 = 10 years).

I expect the next xbox to launch 2010 at earliest but most likely holiday 2011 or 2012.  PS3 japan 2012.  Wii, maybe same schedule as xbox.

Firstly the comment is a lighthearted jab at Sony, and their proclamation that the PS3 will last ten years. Which was and still is marketing bullshit. Not that it hasn't worked on some of the more weak minded or blind faithful. Who actually believe the console will have unparalleled support in 2016. The reality is that support and last are relative terms. You can piss on homeless people once a year for ten years, and honestly proclaim you have supported the homeless for ten years. You could even proclaim that you were a motivational figure in their lives.

Sony deserves to be laughed at for making such ridiculously vague statements. They were a rather piss poor counter argument against the citing of real detractors in regards to their product. I found the joke very humorous, because it does what a joke is often supposed to do highlight the idiocy of something.

Do I think he is serious. Well the answer is he doesn't have to be. Microsoft carries over its online service. So around ten years you will still have your console supported. You will still be able to download extra content, still be able to play with friends online, and still be able to buy arcade games. To me that is the definition of support the ability to still purchase new content for a console.

Neither company is going to be manufacturing their console beyond six or seven years. In fact out of all three competitors I think the PS3 will have the shortest manufacturing cycle. Microsoft is going to go first into the next generation, and Sony is not likely to let them have another year head start. Nintendo is not a high end console manufacturer regardless so they are in no rush. They can show up a year later with a new disruptive design.

360 wont outlast ps3 thats an almost certainty.......sa+les for 360 before prioce cut were sagging.........and i predict ion 2009 microsoft will again find it self in a position where ps3 is selling more worldwide......with no room for price waggling anymore i belive microsoft will launch early for next machine 2010......so in reality 360 lifespan will be shorter than ps3 by a long shot.......i belive all microsoft is trying to do this gen is to aquire a brand userbase to launch onto nex gen...........microsoft will do very well nex gen i predict they could be the number 1 position by then
