Did u read the news posting about the economic crisis? I think that has more to do with it than anything you mentioned in the OP

That's a good point.

Even though times are going to get tough, Square Enix is still starting a new studio to concetrate on Wii and 360 games.

What I got from that news posting was this:

1. It's best to have your studios in EU & NA due to the current crisis

2. It's best to focus these games towards the west in general due to sales trends in gaming

3. The above 2 trends would favor the 360 getting any games that aren't multiplatform and possibly the wii due to the 360 2:1 gap over ps3 in NA

4. New games from new studios doesn't equal good games because S-E is the publisher or even the developer as we've seen in current years.

5. Also, S-E has not done well outside the JRPG market and JRPGs are best made in JP.

Reading your posts, you do a good job making it seem like they're jumping ship with the ps3 because it suks or just hasn't sold enough that they just want to make 360 exclusives? that sentiment itself doesn't make sense because multiplat would be the right answer except they were paid the difference of course.

Only time would tell if this move is actually really beneficial or just introduces unforseen losses on the company because they won't have the luxury of the "buy first, ask questions later" approach that gamers use regarding S-E games in the JRPG genre

they have already picked out a ps3 staff. no way they are abandoning the playstation brand that they have stuck with for over 10 years.

I am a little dismayed that others are surmising that the Cell acquainted staff has already been lined up. These are actually the most difficult of positions to fill. Seeing as so few programmers are conversant in the architecture. While it is true that some middle ware has helped to ease the burden. The reality is that you would still want specialists with the hardware.

This is a interesting development to say the least, and probably shows one thing that certain members of this site dread. Square is moving closer to Microsoft. More to the point they seem to be wholly committed to developing games for the console, and perhaps more titles exclusively. Now if this is the case Sony has lost itself a critical ally. Square will probably not be giving Sony any more exclusive titles.

We have been seeing a progression this entire generation of Square distancing itself from Sony. First came the unhappy comments, then came the exclusives for the 360, then came the rescinding of a Sony exclusive, then we have a console prioritization in Last Remnant. I think most here at least smell the smoke even if they refuse to see the fire. What I want to know is what is next will Sony lose versus as well, or could Microsoft snatch itself up even more exclusives.

This is almost like a veiled message. Square is obviously saying which two consoles are most important for them as a company. The 360 and the Wii.

A whole lot of wrong in this post

They already got people making FFXIII and Versus for the PS3, so yes they have a good amount of people to work on the Cell, plus they're eventually making TLR for the PS3.

How exactly is is SE "distancing itself" from Sony? It still has all 3 FFXIII games, TLR and a crapload of other PSP games...that's an odd way of moving away from a company. (plus the outside chance of the SO:TLH one day)

SE has also stated numerous times that they want to expand their global influence, abandoning the PS3 doesn't exactly fit that with that notion.

Supporting the Wii? The Wii support has been weak at best, the correct statement would be that the DS and PSP are the biggest systems to SE.

@ Skiiuk and Pristine

A former Playstation exclusive third party developer is building a new studio that will only (for the time being) on the 360 and Wii.

I'm not spinning things here, this is a great coup for the Wii/360 and a blow to the PS3.

They jumped ship from snes, you never know. However, every gamer who's been around knows that S-E is getting more irrelevant as the days go by. Hopefully FF13 would change their fortunes but if that game sucks by any chance, there'll be a massive grave with a huge gravestone reading: " R.I.P S-E, you'll be sorely missed"

PS3 missing out on "action oriented games from S-E whoch will be a new IP"

S-E's new IP's aren't that great anyway (only what TWEWY was decent recently)....n action oriented....they should stick to JRPG's imho.

so PS3 really isn't missing out on much as S-E has never proven they can make a decent "proper" action oriented new IP (unless you count KH....but thats a RPG at its roots)

Reaching much?

Why would you say "SE abandoning the PS3?"

That's called flame-bait gebx.

Didn't you just come back from banning? Have you learned nothing?

So you gonna talk about the topic or just trying to rip on gebx?

Get the fuck out if you choose option 2.

OT: That's cool that they are focusing on more action-oriented games.

360 IS OPERATIONAL AFTER 37 DAYS!

oh and one more thing...it doesn't say anywhere its 360 & Wii exclusive.....as common sense tells us they probably already have loads of PS3 devs due to FF Versus 13 & FF 13

If it is 360 & Wii exclusive....then I'm afraid S-E are going to miss out on EU sales big time which will hurt them really bad.

The thing is, when S-E was exclusive to ps2, I don't think they were necessarily paid by sony. many devs were exclusive by choice because they could focus their best on only one platform and make very good sales. Sony themselves could never stop shouting that they didn't pay for exclusives. I don't know what their PR was like during the ps1 gen because I didn't listen to PR back then.

This gen, the gap between 360 and ps3 is not enough to justify any 360-only release from a third party that isn't also multiplat to PC. I could understand the wii exclusives but the 360 ones frankly don't make sense. Perhaps they will in the future when these S-E games in question are made by americans for americans because the ps3 has a miserable 17% market share in NA.

Reading the article again, I think this is SE's attempt of breaking into the Western market more by developing Western Style games. The way Wada speaks and based on prior comments I question what kind of similarities these games will have to those developed in Japan.

FFXIV an FPS confirmed?

Wada is such a Western Fanboy....what's the western form of the word "otaku"?
