You really are one arrogant little punk aren't you?

The only point you keep trying to make is that marketing is this big business that people think they have down to a strict system... I have never said that is false, in fact I know it to be true.

All I said was that watching a commercial on tv is the same as a friend showing it to you on the internet.

You disagreed, going back to your holy marketing practices. I say those don't have nearly the effect on people as you think they do. Whatever. You have made no real point here tonight, other than you think extremely highly of yourself, and that you'd marry marketing if you could.

I'm saying that's not true. and it's proven.
You can't accept that.  Also, studies show that teasers improve later evaluation. I don't know what else to tell you. You refuse to accept anything I say.

"As someone who has studied psychology for a few years, I am starting to wonder if prof00 is starting to go off the deep end. I understand the point that you're trying to make man, but at the same time, it's not always valid. You're trying to see things analytically. When it comes down to it, although some commercials DO actually have deep subliminal meanings, and I believe Sony's do. The issue is that somehow the messages get jumbled.

If someone sees a littlebigplanet 10 second teaser with all in game footage, they're more likely to ask a retail associate about the game or if the game is good. If someone see's a commercial with a happy couple on a date and some image on a wall in the background and it flashes Playstation, without saying the name of the game even, then the message is not fully sent.

I did partially get my ps3 based on the commercials. Nothing about a baby or the cell processor. I just happened to notice the commercials for this game."

You don't know what you I'm talking about. It's not a subliminal message. Its a teaser, it makes you like the full commercial later. This is proven.
I've said these things in response to people saying "they don't show anything" "I didn't even know what was happening"
-its a fucking teaser and designed to be that way for many reasons.

The bolded section is where you completely refute your "psychology training" You have no evidence of this except for your own personal beliefs. The first thing to learn in social pysch is "do not estimate". what you are doing is injecting what you think under the guise of reality. That is what this whole argument has been about.

Commercials are meant to be shown in a specific venue to a specific audience. Obviously, if a target audience lives in sweden they will have different commercials than the target in America. This is where not only does watching the commercial online fail to properly "market" to you (if you live in mexico, etc..), but also your tastes are generally going to be very different.

I don';t know I've tried to relate to you these very simple things but all you wanna say is "i know what I feel" so let's leave it at that. Your feeling equals everyone. Solved

Honestly, if their commercials were working the way that you're talking about, Sony would be doing a lot better than they are. it's not that I don't believe anything that you've said, you've had some valid points but it doesn't inspire people in the way you put it. The truth is in the numbers and I'd be more inclined to believe what you've said if the PS3 wasn't trailing behind everything. When the Metal Gear Solid commercials were on (all about footage), Sony was outselling the 360 every day of the week. These "wishlist" and "reality-randomly hits video game images" commercials obviously aren't doing enough for Sony considering that they just released a ton of really good exclusives.

ps3 average price is 500$ and it has sold 17 million. You are saying it's not good enough. This is where I'm not going to be able to make you understand.

actually these are very well made.
They use a bit of subliminal marketing, make use of "information gap", and they look classy.
the people in the commercials reflect their target demographic, its short and to the point, and shows the product brand twice.
These are good, much better than some of the others. Even the Morphing ps3 from last year was not very good by marketing standards.

I've done studies for class before and looked at a lot of meta-analyses these are quite hard hitting, you just don't realize it.

You can chose to believe me or not believe me, but I've been taking marketing and psychology for like 6 years now. Liberal high school and now college.

It was shown before the Bond movie in my local cinema.

I had to explain what it was about to my friend....

Now thats what I call subliminal.

That is how it mere exposure works.

Take for example this study that was done.

4 girls went to a class of 200 people, auditorium style.

Out of 20 classes, 1 girl went 5 times, 1 girl went 10 times, and one girl went 15 times, and one went 20 times.

These girls were confederates, or, people working under for the study.

At the end of the semester every member in the class was asked to rate 4 girls based on looks, approachability, intelligence, and popularity.

The four girls they were asked to rate were not the four girls who went to the classes, but similarly looking people.

The results lined up like a row of ducks. Lookalikes of those who attended more were judged higher in every category than ones that were there less.

The key in this study was that the class was out of 200 people, its not the kind of thing where you really get a good look at anyone.

Of course under mere exposure, the exposure levels should remain between 10-20 times. If it exceeds that it could "put off" the target by annoying them, or not make any more difference at all. That is why teasers like these are used where they barely showed anything.

lol @ baddman,

And lol @ fishyjoe for another reason >_>

OT:

I wish they stuck with what worked last year the "Do you want it" commercial. Those had good music, and showed games, and got people hyped for the system. Everytime I saw that commercial I got chills. The first true, good, playstation commercial.

You bring up some great points dmj.

That commercial was cool. However, i think they couldv'e done better with their "multifunction metaphor" centerpiece, the swirling black blobbish thing. Sony right now needs an image, yaknow? Something to define it, nail it down, identify with.

Wii has: "Wii would like to play"
I forget the 360 one: "Jump in"?
Sega: "had welcome to the next level" and "SEGA!!"
PS1 had "URNOTE"

I own a ps3 and I don't even know what its thing is. Was it play beyond? Is that over phrase over now?

Now thing about that "do you want it?" commercial is that I think most people on this site will agree that they like it. Now of course everyone has varied tastes, so it probably didn't work well with everyone, and in fact I didn't buy mine because of it, but instead it made me happy for Sony because I thought they were pumped and ready to sell some consoles. Maybe that commercial was aimed at us, the hardcore, and trust me we are all hardcore in this forum, even Rol. So maybe it was effective maybe it wasn't, but there was a great increase in sales after that commercial, so I would think it was very successful.

However, it did one thing wrong. It advertised something it wasn't: HOME.

Now these commercials are teasers and while they may not appear to be effective, they are setting up a "what is it about" atmosphere where the commercials that come out next will be subliminally more likeable because they will provide closure to these teasers. That is how they work, and this strategy can set up some very powerful persuasion forces.

In this way they are saving a lot of money. By cutting down the time frame by 5/6ths of a minute, they save 5/6ths and yet will psychologically more effective ads later. Sure MS is spamming the airwaves like there's no tomorrow, and they show tons of gameplay and whatnot which is great, but very very expensive. Let me also remind you that MS is still barely scratching the red.

For what Sony needs to do now, ie; save money. These are very classy, cost effective ads that will generate just as much interest around buying season (i predict the first full Sony ad to come out before black friday).

And, I can guarantee, that the commercials that do come out, are going to wow a lot of people, and will give you chills again. It may just be because you like the commercial, but, even thugh you may not realize it, because of these teasers, something about them will click, even before you are aware that you like it or not.
