With the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in a heated high-definition battle for the family room -- especially going into the all-important holiday season -- Nintendo is quietly laughing all the way to the bank over its Wii and DS sales.
Matthew Tattle, account manager at the NPD Canada market research firm, has confirmed that the Nintendo Wii is the fastest-selling piece of video game hardware in Canada ever, "hitting the 1 million unit sales mark while only just finishing its second year of sales."
More than 1.1 million Nintendo Wii units have sold in Canada to date, followed by the Xbox 360 at 893,000 units and Sony's PS3 at 544,000 units.
Tattle says Nintendo appears to have the Midas touch: "But nothing has sold more than the Nintendo DS since 2006, with over 1.6 million systems sold in Canada from January '06 to Sep '08."
