Forums - Gaming - Fallout 3 question - will I enjoy this game?

After beating the awesomness that was Gears of War 2 and spending a lot of my gaming time playing multiplayer matches in Halo3, COD4 and now Gears...Im kinda getting tired of non stop action games and want to try something different.

Sure there is fable 2, but Ive played fable 1 and wasn't really feeling it back then. There is mirrors edge...but that looks like a 1 trick pony. But I've noticed Fallout 3 is getting a lot of great praise from reviewers and members of this site.

However, by watching videos, reading the reviews I can't tell if this game is for me. I've never played anything like this before.

So my question is this... Will I like this game? Help me out here...

Some things to consider about my tastes:

-I hated the 2 hours i spent playing oblivion and this comes from same developer if im not mistaking

-I dont do turn based combat that most RPGs require, no thanks.

-Im looking for a great story and engaging gameplay

-Not looking for a game where i have to do stupid tasks to level up...i cant stand that

-Hoping to finish a game in 20-30 hours...anything longer and I don't think I will keep on playing

Thanks for your help

This game sounds like the opposite of your tastes. I just finished all I wanted to do with it in 54 hours.

AceRock owns one PS3, one PS Vita, and one PS4.

In other words, I loved it. But it doesn't sound like your cup of tea.

Same developer, but far more quality in Fallout 3. Although there are similar concepts in both Oblivion and Fallout 3, Fallout 3 is superior in virtually every way (and this comes from a guy that played 250hrs of Oblivion).

Fallout 3 can be played entirely turn based, entirely real time, or in the middle. I assure you that you'll LOVE their take on turn-based combat. There's nothing better than launching a missle at an enemy, and watch it detonate in slo-mo, ripping off body parts.

-Im looking for a great story and engaging gameplay

Fallout 3 has both. It's just below Mass Effect in terms of awesome storytelling and engaging gameplay. Mass Effect is the closest thing I can compare Fallout 3 to, since ME was my GOTY RPG of 2007, and Fallout 3 is just as revolutionary.

Very little XP comes from quest. Killing enemies is the fastest way to level up. Virtually everything gives you XP - selling specific items, beating quests, using skills (hacking, lockpicking, speech), and of course, killing baddies.

-Hoping to finish a game in 20-30 hours...anything longer and I don't think I will keep on playing

Fallout 3 can be beaten entirely dependant on what you want it to be. The main quest takes around 15hrs or so if you did it, and almost only it. Side quests are beefy and lightyears ahead of both Mass Effect and Oblivion. Side quests in Fallout 3 are just as long, and engaging as the main story.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Oh, and you should know (since I viewed your profile):

Some of the quests are downright scary, and some are heavily influenced by some of your favorite movies you listed. There's a quest mirroring the scope/story of Blade Runner that is a great quest.
There are also parts that mimic some of the scenes from Terminator 1 as well.

Thanks mrstickball. As always your insight is appreciated...

I think the only way for me to see if I like this game or not is to try it so I shall...

I guess the question here is should I try Mass Effect isntead?

Why exactly did you have Oblivion? Fallout is very very similar in a great many ways however it's a LOT more user friendly, is much more plot driven and the combat is a lot more enjoyable. Still the world environment (go anywere) lots of empty space, NPC interaction and combat setup are all the same.

To answer your other questions it's not turned based however the VATS combat system (way to get easy criticals) acts like turn based combat. The story is really good, you can easily level up without doing any quests if you so choose and the game can be finished easily in 30 hours if you so choose.

I borrowed oblivion from a freind since everyone was raving about it. I thought captain Pickard as king was cool but rest of the game got on my nerves rather quickly. Combat was my issue...but I had a different mindset back then... I wanted to kill kill kill...
