Forums - Gaming - EGM rumors: Crystal Bearers axed, Little Big Planet PSP extremely ambitious

IGN and some NeoGAF users confirmed it wasn't axed. I remember EGM having another rumor about TCB before similar to this one. They only put the rumor because we haven't heard of it for a while. I won't believe any TCB rumors until SE comes out and says something.

 This.

And I don't think Square-Enix really hates the Wii, I think they just don't know what to do with it.  The success of the system caught them off-guard--the problem was that they invested too much into the HD console that they underestimated how Wii would outperform them all.

Given that this is just a rumor, I too am not going to believe it until I get official proof from Square-Enix themselves.  This is just a RUMOR, not a fact.

Am I the only one who wishes SE would just focus on finishing FFXIII instead of pumping out these other relatively minor games?
Even if this is just a rumour, the fact that they're not fully focussing on their so-called flagship game (which will more than likely outsell all these new FF side projects added together on the first day alone) really annoys me.

Proud Sony Rear Admiral

its not canceled after all

A few things to say on this subject. Firstly the developer is almost always the last party to disclose a cancellation. Instead they prefer to let a game fade from public consciousness, and then a couple years later in a interview they will talk about the cancellation as if it were public knowledge. The longer any game is in development with no news the higher the probability that said game has been canceled. A hiatus in excess of a year is damn near confirmation.

Second its a poor logic that boils down a games potential for success to merely the size of an install base. The Wii has a remarkably different install base from any other current generation console, and for that matter any previous generation console. You could argue that the Wii owner is far more atypical then traditional. Games that would crash and burn on other consoles are mega hits on the Wii. While games that are hits on other consoles would find only deaf ears on the Wii. This game could just as easily be beloved as it could be ignored. In other words its not a given, and Square could with sound reasoning believe it would be the latter.

Thirdly explain to me how can anyone say the Wii user base is even remotely concerned with quality when it comes to Square, and their games. This is the install base that gobbled three quarters of a million units of Dragon Quest Swords in spite of the reviews that pegged it at best being average. The Metacritic score for the title is 66. I would postulate that the typical Wii owner is not very concerned with quality in the least. Nor are they particularly interested in this title. They are the casual install base for a reason. They could bite big time, or they could just ignore the title entirely.

UPDATE - I have received an email from Square-Enix public relations that states that the game has not been cancelled and an official statement will be provided tomorrow.

While much of EGM’s ‘Rumor Mill’ contents end up being accurate, in this case the report is incorrect.

We have never announced that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers has been cancelled and have every intention of releasing it. There may be some concerns as a firm ship date has not been set but rest assured there will be an announcement once we finalize the date internally.

Although there are many Square Enix related rumors out there that we do not comment on, due to the feedback from the readers, we felt it was necessary to provide a statement to alleviate the worries of those who are looking forward to the game. The fan base that the Final Fantasy series has is appreciated by everyone at Square Enix (not only the developers) so we hope this statement will prevent any further spreading of the rumor.

We apologize for any unnecessary distress this rumor may have caused and hope the fans of the series can again look forward to the upcoming release of Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.

I can believe the CB cancellation: Square-Enix loves to insult the Wii at every turn, and what better way than to imply that it's only good for DS ports?

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Um, they JUST announced that it IS going to be released in America.  The "canceled" rumor has been shot down completely.

^Yup, SE's made a statement that it's still in development yesterday, I think.
