Forums - Gaming - EGM September Issue Review Scores- Lair and Blue Dragon Disappoint

To those commenting about how Blue Dragon would only appeal to JRPG fans, I'm sure the people who reviewed it at EGM are JRPG fans. So they are giving it those scores even though they are players of the genre.

Just look at the Persona 3 reviews to see how much JRPGs can get from EGM.

I just think Blue Dragon seems very straightforward and simple, that's what I got from the demo. I hope there is a lot more to it than what my impressions were from playing it.

It's a good game just too typical and straightforward. And I can't help but think if that Sakaguchi was trying to stay as traditional as possible to try and sell the game to the average Japanese gamer who likes their RPGs very straightforward (Pokemon).

Oh, I agree that they like JRPG games; but they probably like them to do something to spice up the formula. From what I've heard, BD stays as close to the formula as it possibly can, and I assume that's intentional, even if it doesn't mean extremely high reviews. The goal is to establish very traditional RPGs on their platforms, as opposed to things like Mass Effect, which deliberately take RPGs in a different direction. I imagine a conversation something like this:

Reviewers: "Blue Dragon is extremely unoriginal. It holds tightly to the JRPG formula and breaks no new ground."

Blue Dragon Developers: "We know. That's what we wanted."

It might have made BD sell better in Japan not to move away from the formula, but it will hurt its sales here I am certain.

Let's see what Lost Odyssey does.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

What about Heavenly swords ?? Both Lair and Heavenly swords are supposed to be released during the same month.

Heeeeyyyy!!!! <Snap>

I doubt blue Dragon will reach 1 Million World Wide now, with 200K already sold in Japan. Its going to be difficult to crack 400K a piece in U.S and E.U

I'm actually surprised that some people are basing their decisions for buying these games based on the reviews -- if a game looks good to you, buy it, or at least hire it out, don't let other people decide what is fun for you

It's odd, because when a review is good from EGM I take it with a grain of salt. On the other side of that, though, they hardly ever under review. They are tough though, so maybe they were a little too tough.

I hope some of the other mags/sites rate it better Sony could use a boost, and I could use a PS3 game. Thank god for Planet Earth (BBC Bluray).

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Famitsu gave Blue Dragon a 37/40, but they are kind of generous sometimes. I don't think either Lair or Blue Dragon are as bad as EGM says they are.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Would anyone happen to know the reviews they gave to previous Factor 5 games, particularly those made for Gamecube? Might be a useful reference.

I've been fearful of the way Lair would play for a while. It looks like initially, it's great fun, but the novelty wears off faster than you would like. I mean, does anyone know if you change dragons, get more abilities as you advance, etc.? It might not offer up enough variety in gameplay or advancements.

Be patient and wait for other reviews.

Yes, and yes to what you said about changing dragons, getting more abilities.  Factor 5 said it themselves.

Has anyone actually read the review, because there is probably something they hate about it, although I dont get how they gave graphics such a poor score. IGN's most recent preview with a near final version of the game said it was brilliant, so maybe the reviewer doesn't like dragons

I absolutely agree with that -- I think their goal was always Japan, and they were willing to accept that it wasn't immediately palatable to western audiences.
