So they are giving it those scores even though they are players of the genre. Just look at the Persona 3 reviews to see how much JRPGs can get from EGM. I just think Blue Dragon seems very straightforward and simple, that's what I got from the demo. I hope there is a lot more to it than what my impressions were from playing it. It's a good game just too typical and straightforward. And I can't help but think if that Sakaguchi was trying to stay as traditional as possible to try and sell the game to the average Japanese gamer who likes their RPGs very straightforward (Pokemon). |
Oh, I agree that they like JRPG games; but they probably like them to do something to spice up the formula. From what I've heard, BD stays as close to the formula as it possibly can, and I assume that's intentional, even if it doesn't mean extremely high reviews. The goal is to establish very traditional RPGs on their platforms, as opposed to things like Mass Effect, which deliberately take RPGs in a different direction. I imagine a conversation something like this:
Reviewers: "Blue Dragon is extremely unoriginal. It holds tightly to the JRPG formula and breaks no new ground."
Blue Dragon Developers: "We know. That's what we wanted."
