Global sales of Epic Games’ Gears of War 2 topped 2 million units worldwide after the game’s first weekend on sale.

The game was released in 20 countries on Friday, November 7th, when more than 20,000 retailers took part in special midnight opening events.

Publisher Microsoft says that more than 1.5 million people logged into the game on Xbox Live over the weekend, with 15 million gameplay hours being recorded – a new record for concurrent Live players. A collective total of more than 19 million Achivements were also unlocked.

@ FishyJoe - I have about 55 or so people on my friends list on live and I'd say they average between 10-15 being online, when I am on-line (10:00 PM US central time); since gears was released that average is closer to 25 - 30 with about 90% playing Gears of War 2. It's pretty funny looking at your friends list and all you see is "Online, playing Gears of War 2".

@ TRios_Zen: None of my friends are on right now, but I'll tell you what they were last doing (according to xbox.com). I have 32:

7 were last playing the Xbox 360 Dashboard
4 were seen x amount of hours or days ago
2 were playing Fable II
2 were playing Halo 3
4 were playing Gears of War 2
3 were playing Left 4 Dead Demo
2 were playing Call of Duty: World at War
8 were blank.

My friends are definitely more varied.
