Since the "new Xbox experience" is getting optional installs for every  most games, Will Sony follow suit like they did with achievements/trophies and offer the same (minus the games that require mandatory installs). I know the PS3's bluray drive runs much more quiet than the 360's dvd drive already, but I wouldn't mind shaving off some seconds on games that I play very often.

No,The PS3 cannot do optional installs,its mandatory,since the better than life Blue Ray is so slow,they HAVE to put info on the HDD,or else you would lag..

Uh what? there are already plently of games that that offer optional installs on the PS3. I'm just asking if there would be optional installs for every game EXCEPT the ones that require mandatory installs you wiffle waffer!

It's certainly possible, but I would imagine that Sony needs to make it mandatory.

Well, most games on the PS3 actually don't even have installs since it's possible to get good streaming by spanning the data multiple times on the bluray disk which is only possible because there's so much space. There are a select few that offer optional installation, then there are some that requires it. I'm just wondering if Sony will ever allow an option to have every non-mandatory install game have an optional one instead, I'm greedy like that and I have a 160gb custom HDD on my PS3.

On topic, I sorta hope they do installs for every game on both systems. Xbox has its 120 gig harddrive, PS3 will have its 160 gig. I don't see any space problems, so hopefully this will be something in the next gen, if not current. So long as it improves the overall performance of the game.

Yeah, but not all 360 have a HDD. All PS3 do, that is why it is optional on 360s.

Folklore also has an optional install; it's around 1GB, if I recall correctly.

I think they might. Hard to imagine they couldn't. After all you'd be mostly talking about multiplatform titles that can install for 360 so why not PS3?

And with cheaper HDD option vs 360 PS3 is actually a better system to have installs on.
