In all honesty the people who were banned were the guys who connected to xbox live (they were warned not to connect till the release date) when they had dled the games(they can find out that way also). I'll fully admit I dled Gears 2 due to the fact that it was leaked 2 weeks early. Which one of you wouldn't if you had the chance to?

Anyways thats the reason why everyone's banned, they pretty much collected the data (I'm assuming) of who had the game in there recently played list before it was released and did one major ban.

P.S Yes I did still purchase Gears 2 day 1 as I had it reserved and actually paid in full before the release day. I support the companioes who put out quality games.

I wouldn't.  And I love how you pretend you're all noble because you buy the game later (and that does make you better than most pirates) but then forget going to the torrent sites supports those sites that host the pirated torrents and then having that torrent lets other people pirate it.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not noble about it. I'm honest, thats it. I've purchased 15 games for my 360 and dled alot more than that. Piracy was the main reason I bought my 360 before my PS3 or Wii.

P.S Because of those torrent sites I have the ability to come home and dl Prison Break after work, so god bless em

You're at least honest about it and don't come up with some lame excuse so don't hate you at least.

Kotaku linked me to the xbox-scene forums, and that's where you get the collections of guys that got banned, since it's a site about hacking your console. Basically it looks to be one of two scenarios, or both:

1. The games each have a unique serial code built in and when they get pirated that one copie's serial code gets repeated onto each new download, meaning that every 360 that uses this game code would get banned. Microsoft basically scans everyone's games(I'm not sure if this would be legal) and they weed out these repeated codes and ban the 360's they are on.

2. Microsoft purposely planted the uncharacteristically early Fallout 3, Saints Row 2 and Gears of War 2 releases onto torrent sites to bait people into downloading them and catching them that way like it were inked money from a bank robbery.

It seemingly doesn't follow a pattern which has people believing that MS isn't banning every offender, but is doing them in groups to cause a hysteria among the 360 owners with custom firmware. The conspiracy at the forum is they are doing it purposely each Fall(this happened last year too) to promote these people to buy a new 360 as part of Christmas to replace their old one, which is unfixable and can never go online again.

  1. Very plausible and wouldn't be illegal at all since you're connecting the game to their networks and they can freely read any information you send them.
  2. This is just conspiracy theory crap and should be treated as such.

It would also make sense that they do it batches so they can make sure things were done correctly and correct mistakes before they move onto the next batch.

I personally see nothing wrong and immoral with copying a game to let a friend borrow it. And out of honor, respect and, morals, go out and buy that game if you like it. If not, return that copied game to the owner. It's the pirates that abuses this prividge and makes us all pay by legality.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

Is it possible that the games had a small program (that would run when the game was loaded) that would check the hardware to see if it was modded? And then when the user connected to the servers, sent this information to MS?

If you connect to Live on a 360, M$ could easily accomplish this without the program being installed on a game.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

Xbox-scene seems to be under the impression that it is for piracy, and not a mess-up.

edit: whoops, I see it's already been mentioned ;)

Pirates are usually unrepentant about their crimes. At the very best you will get a slew of shitty justifications like I made a backup copy, and lent it to a friend. Then there is always the excuse that they are actually doing the company a favor by spreading recognition. Oh then there is the justification that the company was robbing them so stealing was a moral obligation. Then you have the argument well it was my property so I had a right to do whatever I wanted. Then you have the argument that since one is poverty stricken they had no choice, and it cannot hurt the company since they wouldn't purchase the game regardless.

The reality is that for three dollars you can play any game your heart desires. There are these nice people that actually let you rent their games for a modest fee. When you roll through the math it is actually cheaper then modding your hardware, paying for a high speed connection, or buying blank discs. There is no excuse beyond someone being supremely selfish and lazy.

Ironically they may not have paid the price before, but now they will have to. Now they have to pick up a new console which is not cheap. Then they will need to buy the games they stole anyway. All of which is going to mean they have to get off of their lazy asses. Good for Microsoft, and I am sure they have taken into account that they will make big money off of this. Which they deserve to after all these people robbed them so it is like totally justified.

Good riddance. Hope these bans continue. The apologists and spinners have plenty of time to make up stories and justification seeing that they'll have plenty free time from being off Live.
