FFX is great. It has a great endgame and sidequests. I loved it.

However, my favorite FF is FFVIII. That is what I meant when I said X wasn't the best FF since VII, imo.

I think a lot of the opinion on which is better FF wise comes down to characters since the gameplay itself is barely changed from 7 through X-2.

I dunno dude, i think after VII, the gameplay massively changed in VIII, then back to classic style in XI, X, and X-2, then XIII pulled an VIII.

The story in VIII is kinda weak, but the draw/limit system is why I like it so much. The endgame for VIII was fufilling as hell.

I did like that system, but I honestly never finished the game.  I stopped about halfway through disk 3 when I just got so bored with the story and bought Vagrant Story and Xenogears.  Needless to say FF8 fell by the wayside once I had those two games in my hands.  I kept meaning to go back and finish but....

As to the arrogant/confident thing it IS true that most people are not like that, but on the flip side most genuinely heroic types ARE like that.   How much time do you think Patton spent alone in his tent crying about being a lone wolf like Squall?  How many great heros have you heard of that are 14 like most of the Square heroes I dislike?  I appreciated Tidus for his confidence and levity, he was more or less exactly what a RPG hero should be.

And to Khuutra I'm not just talking about stats.  Ever since FF 6 introduced espers where everyone could learn any ability there has been less and less importance placed on what a character starts as.  What I'm talking about is how they act in the game, what archetype they represent (even if you change their stats through clever use of the license board).  In the respect of what kind of character he represents Vahn is most certainly not a heroic figure and should only be a supporting character like Cait Sith or other non heroic characters.

You're serious about that, then.

Grandia, Star Ocean, Front Mission, Act Raiser, The 7th Saga, Ogre Battle, Illusion of Gaia, Valkyrie Profile, Dragon Quest are all excellent games/series.

The real problem was once Square and Enix merged all the popular sequels got big budgets for graphics but crap writing teams while promising new titles were underfunded, under promoted and released in desperate need of polish. It's almost like all the qualities workers jumped ship during the merger.

First off, I never really liked Enix that much.  They were always an also ran to Square, publishing not quite great games.  They were the publishers of a handful of games I did like (Dragon Warrior 4, Brain Lord, Legend of Gaia) but the good games were sporatic and not that great.  The best Enix games I can think of wouldn't even make my Square soft top 10.

SNES and PSX era Square though was the opposite.  They made some of the most fun, most amazing games that defined the SNES and PSX (and even, to a lesser extent, the PS2) as the place to go for RPGs.  From Chrono Trigger, the best of the SNES RPGs, to FF 4 and 6 (6 being a serious contender for that best RPG title) there were just tons of great Square games through the SNES's life cycle.

What JRPG fan doesn't think of Secret of Mana...hell even Secret of Evermore...with a smile?

It only got better on the Playstation.  Every few months there was an absolutely stellar RPG from Square coming out.  Parasite Eve 1 and 2, FFVII, that Ehergize fighting game with the RPG portions, Front Mission, Vagrant Story (the best RPG most people never heard of), Valkryie Profile....the list just goes on and on.  If I were to list the best 20 console RPGs of all time, without a doubt at least 15 would be from Square.

On the PS2 things looked good initially, Final Fantasy X was easily the best FF game since 7, they threw out a few curve balls like the Bouncer which were pretty decent though not great and they even started a pretty good new series, Kingdom Hearts.  There was a lot to like about Square's future and then suddenly...the Enix merger.

Ever since that merger its like the quality fell off a cliff.  They have stopped being Square and have become Enix.  They are mainly publishers and the publish crap games.  They only have exploitations of their old games and nothing new thats any good...I mean I can't think of a single Square Enix game I have liked in half a decade.  In the 5 years the PSX was number one they made 10 of the best games of all time and now they can't manage a single quality title?  The closest one is Crisis Core, which isn't bad, but it sure as hell wasn't up to what I would have expected from old square.

Now the Last Remnant comes out and its crap, not a surprise after Infinite Undiscovery and everything else they've pushed out the door in the past few years has been horrifically bad.  I'm just continually amazed at how far the best company of the last three generations (well only half of the PS2 gen) has fallen.  I find myself ignoring Square now and looking to Atlus, ATLUS! for all my good RPG games.  I mean it wasn't that long ago that ATLUS was the also ran putting out substandard games and now its 100% reversed.  Persona 3 was the best RPG of the past few years, Square doesn't even have a game in contention.

I'm starting to seriously consider the possibility that Final Fantasy 13 might suck.....think of how horrible that would be.

I'm also looking to Atlus for all my RPG needs ;)

Vaan is not the hero of FFXII to begin with.

Around the Network

I would argue that Ashe fulfills that role. Vaan is important for his perspective and how he affects the hero, not for his own acts.

The funny thing is the people who bother to post here are still looking forward to SE games. Most of you cant wait for any KH game or FF game. You guys can argue here all you want but in the end youre still gonna buy their games and most will still defend this/these companies in the end.

Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are over-rated beyond belief.

Im playing Chrono Trigger I like it maybe not far enough to understand the "best RPG ever!!!!" but its a good game so far. Im nee to RPGs I dont see the epicness here. Just another fun game not amazing.

Note - I prefer SRPG to RPG.
No bias I swear. I wanted to like FF Tactics but it is terrible. Fire Emblem and Yggdra Union run circles around it.

FFXIII had better have a main character of legal drinking age or older with some balls.

Erm.. i hope not.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but Lightning looks pretty much like a female, so i should hope she doesn't have any in the physical sense!

That said, SE has mdae a bunch of rather effeminate looking characters before who might or might not be hermaphrodites.

Unfortunately I have to disagree with you on your main character breakdowns though. FFIX and XII were my absolute favorite Playstation FF's.

It´s not up to you to say if Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are overrated, but overhyped instead because so many people still play them. Playing Chrono Trigger now is not the same as playing it chronologically correctly. If you at least had played it in the mid 90´s you would have grasped its epicness. But in the end it´s  just a personal opinion. I love FFT and hate Disgaea, see what I did here?
