Forums - Nintendo - Will the Wii ever match the 64 in terms of awesome platformers?

The N64 had Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie 1 & 2 and Donkey Kong 64.

Currently, the Wii has Super Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario.

As we already know that there is comming a SMG 2, I would say that the Wii has a good change of equalling the N64.

I doubt it'll ever match it in awesome games. But we sure as hell will get more games than we did on the N64.

Well no, I think. Rare's gone, and platformers aren't a popular genre of gaming anymore. I also don't think Zelda games qualify as platformers, but that's another discussion entirely.
And like HappySqurriel said, no platforming game that comes out now is ever gonna have the impact the N64 classics had. Still, Wii already has some excellent platformers. :)

 This ^^

I dont really think MS and rare go together... Rare and Nintendo seemed to work better together.

The N64 had some top platform games, I have to admit to being a tad nervous about Super Mario Galaxy, but it was pulled off magnificently. Todays gamers seem to prefer online games and casual stuff, but they shouldn't leave the core gamers behind.

The quality of platforming on the 64 still keeps me coming back, almost all of my favourite games of all time come from the 64...

The 64 had Mario 64, Zelda OOT, Zelda MM, as well as Banjo Kazooie 1 & 2 and Donkey Kong 64.

Will the Wii ever have that many awesome platformers to brag of? i certainly hope so...

We do have a completely awesome platformer for the Wii. I'm sure you've played Super Mario Galaxy? I'll take that over Banjo Kazooie any day.

Yes, the Wii is already almost at the level of great platformers that the N64 had. Next year, it will likely pass the N64. I may never pass the SNES or NES but most of the best SNES and NES platformers are also on the Wii (along with great platformers from other VC).

Platformers sadly are no longer the Big Games like they used to be, but in 2 years Wii has some great offerings: SMG, Super Paper Mario, De Blob, Wario Land are all great Platforming games, and there will be more.

and Wario Land: Shake It!

And we do know that SMG2 is coming? Hopefully it'll be fun in comparison to the first.

I don't count those games. They may be good considering the Wii's library, but they're nothing compared to BK/DK64/Mario 64.

Does that mean that you didn't like the first Super Mario Galaxy?

BTW, there isn't any real proof, but Miyamoto has given some solid hints at it.
