Forums - General - Help me find a good receiver please!

So my receiver suck.  A lot.  It's nice because it upscales thingsto 702p  and can do 1080i and that's as high as my TV can go but sometimes the sound cuts out when switching from 720p television ti 1080i television, the volume controls don't always work, and it has just been pissing me off.

So I'm more than likely going to sell my current TV soon and I want to get a new receiver to prepare for it.  I already know I'm going to get a 1080p TV but I'm clueless to what receiver I should get it.

  • I have 5.1 sound but I wouldn't mind getting a 7.1 receiver so I can upgrade
  • I'm going to get a TV that can do 1080p
  • I'd like something that upscales to at least 720p, preferably 1080p if that's possible.
  • Things I have to connect to it: 360 (no HDMI though I might change that), Wii, PS3, and Verizon FioS cable.
  • It would be cool if I could get one that I connect my iPod to but isn't a requirement.
  • I want to buy the receiver first (since mine is a pain) so it needs to support my 720p/1080i TV

I was looking at this one.  It seems to have everything I want I guess but why are ones like this more than $1000 more?

I'd like to be cheap like the first one, but if the benefits of the more expensive one greatly outweigh the benefits of the cheaper one than I could put off getting a TV to getting one like that.

How much are you looking to spend?

I picked up a Yamaha RX-V663 for I believe $450 a couple months ago and it does upscale to 1080P. Personally, I am not a fan of the Sony receivers as they have too many in my opinion that end up defective. Don't get me wrong, they are good, but for the money they usually aren't worth it.

Ah, I just assumed the Sony ones were really good because Sony usually makes good electronics.

I'd like to spend less than $500 but I would be willing to go higher if it's actually worth it. I have no idea why the $1500 ones are that much and that's even more than any TV I'm willing to buy.

Personally, most people will not need one that cost so dang much. So as long as you aren't some crazy audiophile that needs ultimate control of everything and many features that 99% of people wouldn't even bother with, you can get a good one for less then $500.

One thing I loved was that with my Yamaha receiver is that it has a mic that plugs into it, and when setting up it will auto test and set up the audio settings by holding it at about ear level. Like I said, sony makes good, but not exceptional mid range/low price audio equipment. I personally find Yamaha, and Onkyo (and others) in a league above Sony when it comes to audio receivers.

Normally, you can't go wrong at all with them... However, their "low end" is still expensive and I'd be a bit shaky on the quality of the low end... Mid and high end, they are amongst the best.

-edit-

Actually, I don't think that's the one I have because I could have swore the one I got couldn't do 1080p.  Maybe it was it just couldn't upscale to 1080p.

I'm not sure but I've heard that Onkyo is the best brand for receivers
