But still, all you're really saying is that there are more fresh new franchises in a market without any old ones.  Um, yes? 

Fortunately, if the old ones get stale they generally become unpopular and get replaced.  That pretty much happened with Crash and Spyro, even though a small zombie of each franchise may still be shuffling around.  It's your misfortune that you apparently have a much higher definition of fresh than most.

Yeah exactly. Ratchet and Clank = Good Game    Super Mario Galaxy = Good Game

But how many times have we seen these characters used? How much has really changed? Okami is the biggest example of this. My god that was an amazing game, but I think some of the platformers out on both the ps2 and Wii derived from it. No one heres about it cause all the marketing goes into the tried and true games like Mario.

You could say that but that's not what im getting at. Beyond Good and Evil, Okami. Those arn't typical platformers, but they're platformers nonetheless that get overshadowed by over marketed games, and that's what happens. Its like you have 3 guys trying to get your attention then all of a sudden someone like Mario steps into the picture.  He's so big that you can't see past him and think he's the only thing there so you pick him as your friend. So what does this do? It makes many developers try to copy whats big, much like hollywood. It's like you have that really high budget movie that is total crap but everyone watches, then you have that really low budget that no one has heard of or didn't even get made cause the company thought that he audience might not  "get it" but would have been a great movie.

(Mind that when i say you i mean someone who doesn't generally go to video game forums)

But from where I sit you're still basically saying that you wish all those big franchises weren't there so the awesome no-name games had more of a chance ... when being a no-name upstart is exactly the position all IPs began in.

The only things you REALLY have here, IMO, are that fame is a popularity contest, lots of gamers are (like most consumer groups) sheep, and lots of awesome "Brand X" games get overlooked because of that and too-small advertising budgets.

All killing the old franchises would accomplish is ensure that a new crop of big dominating franchises would spring up to take their places.

Getting closer what I' am saying is games need to take there few years in the spotlight then pass the torch. Well Mario has held onto that torch for 20 years now while sharing a silver ribbon with link and making bronze to split with kirby and donkey kong.

 

Here is something you could use against me though....I'm still happy with Link and the FF games. :P

Well, I think that it's OK as long as the old franchise still earns the right to keep its throne. That's where we seem to disagree. [edit:  A lot of people say FF has been failing to earn its place for a while now.  I don't know about that, but the level to which it's been trading on past glory is a bit troubling and may be a bad sign on that score.]

(There's absolutely no way anyone can get a "mandatory retirement" rule in place anyway.)

actually i somewhat agree with you on that as well its just I don't think Mario really deserves the throne that much anymore. And for the FF falling for some reason i just think it's hype. I loved all the Final Fantasies except for 9 and the crystal chronicles. 10 was my favorite simply because of how beautiful it was made i loved the story, 11 kicked some ass, and 12 had an amazing story and pretty fun battle system IMO.
Were kinda getting off topic lol....I just don't think mario games are really on par with what everyone hypes them to be nowadays. They're still good games but there are better out that have been overshadowed.

P.S. Better games than Mario? You mentioned Okami and BG&E. What else do I need to make sure I've got?
