Forums - Sales - Marketshare percentage changes

Has anybody else noticed how the 360's marketshare percentage has steadily dropped equally to the Wii's marketshare gain, while the PS3's stayed the same, more-or-less?

I remember there was a point when the PS3 had 22.2%, the 360 had 33.3%, and the Wii had 44.4%.

Now, the PS3 is still at 22.2% (it's fluctuated, but obviously stayed relatively close to that), the 360 is at 30% (dropped 3.3%), and the Wii is at 47.7% (gained 3.3%).

...does anybody else find that sort-of funny?

That's because in order to not loose marketshare, the X360 needs to have at least 30% of the sales.

A thread like this was made yesterday

Eh, that's not exactly true in the least. In order to not lose marketshare, each system has to sell the same amount each week as they have in marketshare.

Currently, since the 360 is at 30%, then yes, the 360 has to have 30% of the sales. Before, it was 33.3% they needed. The Wii has to have at least 47.7% of the sales each week in order to keep their marketshare from dropping.

That's third-grade math logic, and entirely obvious.

The point, though, is that the PS3 has managed to stay almost precisely at 22.2% for the past umpteen months (since whenever it was that it got to 22.2%), while the change that we have seen has been a direct loss of marketshare completely from the 360 to the Wii. This sort of thing is a strange coincidence, and I found it interesting.

Also, I tried finding this "thread like this" and none was to be found. Help me out, eh?

All it means is that the PS3 is selling about 22.2% of each weekly marketshare.... that is the only factor in this. If the PS3 were selling more or less than that each week then it would stop the 360 decrease equaling the Wii increase.

In other words if one console is selling consistently then the other two will always be the exact opposite regarding increase/decrease.

It's not particularly remarkable, but a small coincidence none the less I suppose that PS3 has found it's position so early.
