Forums - Microsoft - Gears of War 2 impressions...

This game is excellent. I don't know how much better Epic could have done.

The framerates are solid, the new curb stomps are a ton of fun, active reload is better, cover is a 10 fold improvement, all the new weapons are cool, this is the only game where I found a flamethrower useful, the environments are more varied, there are sections with way more enemies all at once, the Centaur vehicle is riots, some of the dialogues are hilarious, I would compare the graphics to any other shipping game today, and the pacing of the campaign is perfect.

There are a few faults as you finish chapters the screen goes black, and comes back with a jarring effect, but that seems to be some sort of load transition more then anything. The game itself is deserving of the 94-ish reviews. Not perfect but really close.

Wow, did someone actually say that the graphics on this game are not great?

I love it so far. Gotten to the point where you drive the Centaur. Played horde mode for a while as well and it is a friggen blast. Completely and utterly fun.

Well after playing a few more hours it really is growing on me, the first matches I've played in multiplayer was in the ruin map and the other one in the city type was not that great too, don't like em anyways, played a few more matches and its not bad at all, the no quit thing is growing on me, its just when its laggy that it sucks to not be able to quit.
The campaign is actually like I've said pretty good I'm now underground right after the scene where this cowboy guy and black tatooted one was fighting this guy with a chainsaw lance or something like that. I actually really like it now and I think I might get back on my word lol.

My favorite games for this gen:

1. Gears of War    2. MGS4    3. Killzone 2   4. Halo 3(Underated by many)      5. Mass Effect

Jesus, I love this game SO much! I didn't think it was possible to improve on perfection this much.

It's much more colorful, with more varied environments. There's SO much going on around you that you really do get the feeling that you're part of something bigger (hundreds of enemies at times, Brumaks and Seeders popping up out of nowhere, large squads of allied soldiers helping you out, the list goes on!)

They fixed all of the glithces from the first game--no host advantage, shotgun DDR, no more accidentally slamming into cover while you're running, it's AWESOME.

And don't even get me started on Horde--I've played that alone for at least 10 hours already

 this.

shotgun is still powerful, its just a bit slow..

LOL at the fanbot OP. Finished Gears 2 on a beautiful 1080p TV. The same TV me and my mate finished Uncharted. Anyways, Geras 2 graphics are some way in front of Uncharted.

The game is in my top 5 games of all time.

Leaves thread and laughs at fanboys attempts to knock the game.

Gears 2 is the best game that i had ever played

Nostalgia blinds fans... put in gears 1 and play for a while after you've played 2 then go back and play 2. I've watched some HD videos (haven't gotten the game yet... maybe on the 13th when I get paid) and it's more then a step above the original.

Gears 2 looks absolutely STUNNING.....!!!!!!!!! i started playing this beauty last nigtht at work, and have completed the 1st act, the plan is to play one act each night so that the storymode lasts me until midweek and then i can play it online when im off next weekend, but i have to say that the game is so good that i found it incredibly hard to put the pad down, so to stick to my vow of only one act per day i found myself doing the training levels so that i could keep playing this beauty, then when training was done i tested out horde mode and thats fantastic aswell............... a truly E.P.I.C. game.

Well I'll see in the long run, maybe my opinion will change on the game but right now the multiplayer sucks balls, you can't choose you map, no customization of the game, its mostly random also why can't I even quit a match thats so laggy its pretty much unplayable ? The characters weight doesn't feel as much as the first one, and Dom is a big cry babby now.

Still the single player mode other than the textures that are not as good as the first one is pretty good.

1. Play a private match. You can pick the map, gametype, and tweak all kinds of options (like mess around with weapon spawns)

2. I have no idea what lag you're talking about, but try to imagine what the rest of your team would be thinking. "Oh, perfect, not only do we ha lag but some f*cker on our team quit!"

3. "...Dom is a big cry babby now." Yes, how dare someone get emotional that their wife is lost somewhere on a planet gettingoverrun by aliens. By the way, aren't you a huge Metal Gear Solid fan? XD

If he is, then I am suprised that he would complained about a character being emo(which is not a bad thing at all). Western developers may be ahead of Japanese developers but Western developers can still learn a thing or two about storytelling from the Japanese. I don't mean they should use 45 minute cutscenes. I just mean that Western developers shouldn't make their characters so stereotypical(though the Japanese developers do it a lot too). If Dom is emo, then he has broken the "emotionless muscle man" stereotype. Western developers seem to be improving their storytelling. There seems to be a groning trend with first person shooters starting to have deeper stories.

Well to me Gears is not about being emo its about raw action and breaking locust skull :D Anyways I'll go back to gears 1 and play the multiplayer just for comparison, I don't think anyone should say that this game is gears1.5 because the change is big and the gameplay is a quite a bit different than the original.

Them saying I'm a troll well I'm not, I'm a big fan of the first Gears and I'm just giving an unbias comparison between the two. I don't play a game thinking its awsome just because its the same name with a 2 in front of it.

I have to say that after buying the game this morning and reaching the cave section, this is the closest that a game I have played has come to rivalling Crysis in the graphic department. I play Crysis on maximum settings in 1920x1200, and even though the resolution isn't quite as good, and the AA is slightly worse, gears 2 is stunning. I didn't think graphics like these could play on the current generation of consoles. Initially I thought it just looked like the original game with some added colour, but they have really pushed the boat out further on in the game.

Aside from the graphics, I am enjoying the gameplay though I find myself dying quite a lot (probably down to the difficulty and me being too far forward in fire fights). I am playing bits of pieces of the game at the moment and trying to space it out a bit so I down rush through it in one go... anyway, back to it.
