The problem is that you are a douche. I don't call people who don't play games on everything they can get their hands on for hardcore gamers, as you seem to think you are. The Wii is great because it's something new and because it has fun games. It's that simple.

 I hate people like u.

I hate people who can't understand why something that doesn't appeal to them as an arrogant, elite minority appeals to everyone else.

Aurally examine my music!

Wear gaudy colours or avoid display. It's all the same.

Be warned, I will use walls of polysyllables and complex clauses as a defence against lucid argument.

Wand to read a creepy thread?

Your question deserves a serious and well thought-out answer. It has been discussed back and forth on this forum before, and everyone has their own spin on it. You might get an answer of sorts from Sean Malstrom's Disruption Chronicles, but that might be a bit long-winded and highflying for your taste (not to mention offensive).

In short, I would say that the reason the Wii is succesful is BECAUSE it does not appeal to you. How many "hardcore-gamers" do you think is out there, really? Not that many, in comparison to the amount of people there are. Why should one go after such a small group of people, really, when there's a massive group that is uncatered to?

Those that do not play games (mothers, grandfathers, teenage girls... everyone except for the 14-35 year old male, really) have never really been considered by the industry. Because they don't play games, so why make games they want to play?

The answer to that question, naturally, is to simply point at The Sims, the Touch Generation games, Guitar Hero and Singstar. When games try to really do something fun or useful for the people outside the traditional group of gamers, they succeed big-time.

All in all, I think that you should not be worried about the Wii's success. What it will do is that it will open more people up to gaming as a concept, and you'll be getting less stares at work when you say you own a PS3, and someone might even want to join you in a game of Buzz or Singstar.

Isn't it better overall if all types of people can enjoy gaming rather than just a tiny group of people (like you)?

Thank you Killergran.  You actually tried to answer his question and not flame him.  And you did a very good job doing it.  I hope there are more members like this on this site.

Welcome to being part of the minority for once.

I can understand that some gamers will really never understand the Wii. People who have spend the last ten years diving into deep complex games, playing hours at a time won't understand that for most people, with busy lives and many hobbies, gaming is mostly about social interaction and just having fun for short bursts. If your idea of fun is learning an ultra complex button combination and perfecting it over a few hundred goes, then the Wii just may not be your cup of tea.

But i can probably tell you why the Wii is selling so much. The main reason is because for decades, whilst gamers were out playing GTA, Halo, WOW etc., most gamers, including just about 80% of female gamers, were on yahoo games playing Diamonds, doing crossword puzzles, or playing board games when social interaction was the main goal. Nintendo recognized this and brought out the DS, pretty much a handheld version of Yahoo games.

I think what hardcore gamers never realised, is that they were always in the minority in terms of numbers. Yes 120 million people bought a PS2, but hundreds of millions women and girls were playing games on the PC. Yes in the states over 90% of women play computer games. And honestly, how exactly are the 360 and the PS3 catering to this demographic? I don't see cheerleaders getting excited over multiplayer Halo, or moms bugging their kids for one more game of Grand Turismo. But when people are gathered together, of different age groups and demographics, lets be honest, who does not want to play Wii bowling with grandma, if only just to a 93 year old woman enjoy gaming?

Did you even read his post?? The guy's just asking why it's so popular and giving his background on gaming.  Sorry he's not omniscient like you.

The OP doesn't need any help. I'm sure that they are many people that had similar gripes with him back when the first PS stuffed both the N64 and the Saturn in sales.

Another great POV.  I agree

It's #1 simply because the wii is cheap, it's creative in it's own way and it's diffrent
How is it diffrent? Well Let me put it this way, Xbox360 and PS3 are preety much the same shit, they both have the same damn games, except for some exclusives of course. I hear alot about the PS3 being more powerful than the Xbox360 But damn the Xbox has some preety damn good looking games like gears of war makes alot of PS3 games look like shit and that what i mean they are both preety much the same.

Look at the wii it has it's own line up of games, It gives gamers a Breath of fresh air from the same shit the PS3 and Xbox360 throws in your face. Yeah, the Wii is less stellar in graphics than the Xbox and PS3 But it's deffinetly not a PS2 or original Xbow the wii is stronger than that look at metroid, Mario galaxy and you'll see. I like how the wii took this aproach it's more advanced in graphics than the last Gen systems but not by alot, and that's good enough for me, Graphics don't always make a good game. Hell i love playing the old games on the Virtual console some old SNES games and Sega games make some PS3 and Xbox360 games look like shit because they are gems and are just down right awesome.

Video games have come a long way, these days If the game doesent have blood and gore, and heads flying off it sucks ( according to most PS3 and Xbox fan boys)
I enjoy the games nintendo gives us and the system it gave us this Gen, But that's just me i guess ^^

35 years old and still haven't learned the lesson your nephew is showing you right now.

His playing games, to have fun.

Stop looking at video games so seriously and just play them.

I didn't want to start a polemic. mine was only a question. I have always played tons of games in my life with may different consoles (from atari to amiga, from commodore 64 to pc and so on) i have always appreciated games like granturismo, or like monkey island, like call of duty o like resident evil, like sonic or like lemmings...every kind of genre, as you can see.

but when i tried to use the wii, i don't have fun. I'm NOT saying wii sucks...i'm only asking your opinion about what is happening to me..ok?

 Resident Evil you say?

check out Resident Evil 4 Wii edition. It shits all over GCN and PS2 version with with Wii Remote. That reason alone is why so many Wii owners have been fighting on the forums about why Resident Evil 5 should be on Wii.

I have played both versions (standard controls and Wii remote) and the game play is so much more fun. If your really a gamer and a fan of RE like you say try that on wii and you won't be dissapointed.

Because the market for people that want to have fun is far larger than the market of people who "'ve always dedicated their lives to videogames".

The Wii is incredibly fun. Wii Sports is incredibly fun, Nintendo franchises have always been based on being incredibly fun. Fun is oozing out the Wii's wazzoo right now.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.
