Conservative and Liberal are ambiguous in every country. Liberal politically means (in modern terms) they support a market where natural forces rule but the roughnesses of the natural state of the economy is limited and controlled by government action. Conservative politically means THE SAME THING. The madness is in the methods.
The fact of the matter is Americans are very conservative (in the social meaning of the word), even the ones who think they are liberal aren't. Socially, conservative means that there is resistance to social or political change. Americans are generally socially conservative because they are comfortable. Even the unemployed, un-health-cared, have it pretty good so they don't push to hard for extreme change out of fear of something worse.
Into the main topic: That's why Obama had to define a lot of change as something that was slight in degree, familiar, and safe.
Look at his change:
Not a believer that the government is good at doing things, he supports subsidizing and regulating privatized health care so everyone can afford it and no one is denied medical service that they need. He also wants to reduce abuse and increase efficiency, to cut down on costs to consumers and the providers. That is why the providers were unofficially endorsing him.
The military will still be the best in the world but an emphasis on the RIGHT equipment, training, and information systems to get the jobs done. He was endorsed by Powell, so I assume he's heard of the Powell Doctorine. Make sure the military is given accomplishable goals and is given the resources to use overwhelming force.
etc...
I know, I know. He already won, I don't need to sell it anymore. I'm just so excited to have such a capable president elect lined up to take office in January.
