The whole call both of the Marriage or call both of them union is another example of gays wanting to be treated the same as heterosexuals.  This is not the same as giving them equal rights.

Creating a separate legal status that is the exact same thing only for homos is ridiculous.  I agree with TheRealMafoo.  If "marriage" is a word with such irreconcilable religious connotations that it can't be used on gay people, the state shouldn't be declaring people married in the first place.

And next time, if you're referring to a different thread, please be more specific than "that other post".

And do you support giving them equal rights?  Because the amendment that thread refers to denies them even civil unions, which apparently are still not equivalent to marriage in legal terms.

As for the Florida banning gay marriage, I said before that gay marriage is an oxymoron according to it's current definition. It is like they banned boiling ice. They should not, however, deny them the same economic rights that married couples have.

And still, it seems that homosexual couples pushing for "gay marriage" is more interested in sounding like other heterosexual couples than getting equal rights. It's an acceptance thing. When blacks wanted equal rights, they did not want themselves to be called the same as whites. Rather, they just wanted the same constitutional rights.

"Separate but equal" seldom works out. Black folks know this very well.

Is is not true that Florida also banned civil unions for gays?

And I think you are talking completely out of your ass when you say that gays care less about equal rights than the word "marriage".

I knew Obama was gonna win. Its all about perception because most voters do not actually look at, or care for that matter, about the candidate's real platform.

The ignorant see Obama as a socialist or even a terrorist, and on the other spectrum, they see McCain as a third Bush term. Obama is seen as change and hope, even if his policies have almost no change in them than the usual democrat.

But its about perception. McCain is the old, Obama the new and there was nothing that couldve stopped that. Just walking around my college I could see that. I bet if you went to the average voter and asked what they knew about their candidate, they wouldnt know anything except what was on their signs. This goes for both sides.

It really is sad when a McCain supporter like myself knows more about Obama's platform than his supporters, but then again its the same the other way around.

Here's to Obama though, I hope to see if he can actually fix the many problems that America has.

Heh, you can say that again!

I'm really not worried though... Obama will do well even though I don't agree with most of his policies.  He'll most likely shift towards the center of the political spectrum now that he's in office because although the Dems now have the majority control of the government, they didn't manage to win a 60 seat majority in the Senate which would have basically rendered them fillibuster proof.  So pushing a left-wing agenda right out of the gate is something they're gonna want to avoid, lest then alienate virtually half the country right off the bat.

There's only 2 things that concern me now... how he handles foreign affairs and whether or not he pushes towards more social policies like universal healthcare and the so-called "tax-cuts for 95% of Americans" which is basically redistributing wealth without actually creating new wealth.

It may not create new wealth, but it will help the economy.  People that are wealthy, in this climate, are not likely to spend any extra money you give them right now.  Middle/Lower class people, on the other hand, will spend any tax break they get, thus driving things in a positive direction.

Sorry.  Once it went from people to issues I figured the original topic was done for.

Meh. I was only a McCain supporter because I vastly preferred him to Obama.

I would've voted for Ron Paul, my preferred candidate (by far), but I figured at least I had some sort of a chance voting for McCain.

Off topic: Okami rocks.

As an Okami-loving republican, I regard this as an abomination.

@Final-Fan

Nah, no problem.  I'm feeling a bit recovered today, anyway.  Not that anything's changed, though (for me).

Gay marriage isn't a civil right. Legal recognition of economic co-dependance is. Marriage is a religious institution, and I cannot for the life of me understand why homosexuals want a label that has identified so closely with religions that dont support them for thousands of years.

If your argument is that the state should not be declaring people "married", then you would support taking that legal recognition AWAY from straight couples instead of giving it to gays? The whole point of the civil rights angle is equal rights, so I guess that would work. Good luck with that though.

All major religions support male-female marriage in all (normal) forms whether within or without their specific religion.

Hell, you could say they are happy to license it out to the state.

So now your argument is that the law should be dictated by MAJOR religions and not the many gay-friendly and gay-only churches?

Marriage is defined as the union between a white man and a white woman.  Why do blacks want to be treated the same way as white people?  They can have the same rights, but let's just call them "stupid different black unions."

Feel free to change the underlined parts to gay, straight, civil unions, or anything else for even funnier jokes to show how pathetic the whole argument is, and to show that it really is an attack on civil rights.
