Windows XP Pro on all my machines. I've never had any problems with it and despite what people say about MS, it's a good system. Before that it was Windows 2000 and then 98 SE. I really don't see why people run things other than XP. Everything works on it (well, maybe not now with Vista), it's easy to repair, and it is fairly intuitive. Usually the only people that don't like it are the sheep that listen to the Mac commercials or the dorks that were told by someone they think knows what they're talking about that MS is the devil and open source is the ultimate best thing ever.

I've played with Vista and it looks pretty cool but there's nothing special about it yet. Give it a few years and it will be worth it; XP was bad when it first came out too.

I've played with Linux, and I know the Linux dorks are going to get at me for this, but it sucks. Yeah, it's faster because it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but it doesn't just work. The programs it does have are generally bad knockoffs of MS products that don't have a lot of the good features and other things run in an emulator which makes it slower and buggy. I'm sorry, but I hate Linux.

I've played with Macs and have done a small amount of work on them, but I've never owned one. From what I have done on them, they're pretty and I'm sure once you learn where the shortcuts and where everything is they're fun to use, but something about them just doesn't feel right. I don't know if it's their keyboards are slightly different, the mouse has one button, or the fact I know I can't get in there and tinker with things, but I just never felt right using them.

I'll agree with anyone who's prepared to explain in detail why their choice is theone they use, but respect and constructively criticize others' choices. You are correct, things often don't just work in Linux, that's the most frustrating bit.

I disagree about the bells and whistles. Have you seen Beryl?

Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.

If you are interested in trying Ubuntu or Linux in general, PM me and I will answer your questions and help you install it if you wish.

It's nice to know I'm not alone.  Well said, twesterm.

XP and Ubuntu.

XP for microsoft word, and a host of other random applications, linux for work.

i upgraded to feisty the last couple of days and it broke quite a few things. at this rate linux isn't ever gonna be ready for the mass consumers, even if dell is gonna package ubuntu on some of its computers.

the Wii is an epidemic.

Windows XP Pro. The relability of the computer depends on the user. My system is very tweaked and optimized. Not even my sister, who has some kind of curse on electronical devices, can get virus on it.

Also, it has a lot of options to customize its looks and to scale it on weaker PC's, so It's my first choice on the PC's I sell too.

Oh, and I do believe in free software too.... ;)

The problem is, that windows manager is in beta, and like much open source software, I doubt it will ever get out of beta.  If you were to try and run it on a system much different than that on which it was developed, chances are you'll run into trouble.

Ubuntu/XP Pro

By me:

Made with Blender + LuxRender
"Since you can´t understand ... there is no point to taking you seriously."

Just Ubuntu. I use it to game too, because I'm not a cheap-o and I take the time to make my games work. :P

I have two computers at my desk at home. I primarily use Windows XP and I have no intention to upgrade to Vista any time soon. My other dual boots Windows XP and Ubuntu. The Gimp is close, but not quite as powerful as Photoshop. The same with Inkscape compared against Illustrator except it's even buggier. I have Ubuntu on there only to experiment with software for work.

I'd be interested to know if anyone here only uses Ubuntu (no dual booting or second computers) and what they do on it. I used only Ubuntu for a little over a month as a personal experiment. When I reinstalled Windows, it was actually a breath of fresh air. No distribution of Linux is quite at the desktop level. It almost worked, but I needed Photoshop. Running Photoshop in wine or running it as under a VM just didn't make since. It also hampered my PC gaming. Beryl/Compiz, is great, but it's still buggy and is not quite, but almost, stable enough to run comfortably as a primary windows manager. I will admit however, that it's the best damn eye candy of any OS I know of.

At work, I have Slackware Linux on our server. For me, Linux is to a server as Windows is to a desktop and wouldn't have it any other way.

I hope to start working on building an OSX computer just for S&Gs, but haven't gotten along to it as of yet. I always liked Apple, but it never quite fitted in with all my needs. Plus they've always been overpriced.

Bah, I type too much.

XP on the "gaming computer" and my gf's laptop.

My laptop (Thinkpad T42) is running Debian Etch. I use this one for work and it runs great on 768mb of ram. If I loaded XP or Vista on this thing it would probably crawl.

PS360 ftw!

Currently playing..........

Gears of War 2, GTA IV Lost and Damned, Little Big Planet (Yes I said I had no interest but my girl wanted to try it and we did and now Im hooked )
