Forums - Microsoft - Nazna's Tales of Vesperia Impressions

So I've played about 5 hours of Vesperia now. Thought I'd give some impressions, as a skeptic of both the game and the Tales franchise in general.

Characters - A somewhat refreshing change for the franchise is the characters are not disturbed teenagers (well, a couple are teenagers, but not emotionally fragile and disturbed).  On the other hand, they still follow some fairly standard anime conventions.  The two friends, one anti-hero and one heroic rival are a fairly common anime staple.  I can forgive that as the staple has resulted in some of the better anime out there though, and there's potential for the story in relation to that.  I won't have a separate section for the story, because I'm not far enough to know anything about it.  I will however syay it follows the annoying Tales habit of throwing you into a world with barely a cursory explanation so you don't know what people are talking about for the first few hours of the game at least (still barely know what Blastia are).

Visuals - Eh, it's pretty bare bones, but at the same time it's trying to mimmick an anime, which is usually relatively simple in design to make the animation easier, so I can see why they kept it from getting overly detailed.  There are certainly some very beautiful moments in both the game and the anime cutscenes.  I wish the game would pick something though, as it seems to switch from in-game, to anime, to CG for its cutscenes.  Kinda schizophrenic, but whatever.  Not really any complaints here.

Audio - The opening theme (called Ring a Bell by Japanese and English singer Bonnie Pink) has a catchy melody, which is to be expected of a Tales game.  The battle and world music is usually pretty generic, but there are times where it will supprise you with some nice sweeping instrumental songs.  The voice acting is good overall.  Certainly an improvement on past Tales games, if not up to the industry's best standards.  It's good enough that I have no burning desire for a Japanese voices selection so I'd say that's a fairly good compliment from me.

Gameplay - As with every 3D Tales game, it inches the gameplay forward one more notch above the previous efforts in Abyss, which inched it forward from Symphonia. Luckily the formula worked pretty well in the first place. It's pretty good overall, and button mashing will only get you through the trash fights.  Micromanagement of your party's preset abilities is required for some of the tougher bosses.

My one huge complaint is with the 4th boss fight in the game.  A boss named Gattuso, who from a cursory glance around the internet is the hardest boss in the game by 2X over.  It's incredibly frustrating, and it took me 9 tries to kill it.  I'm no Tales newbie either.  He would be enough to stop many people new to the series from playing the game ever again.  IMO that's a major design issue, and something devs need to catch.

Overall I'd say it's better than the relatively low bar set by previous 3D entries than the Tales franchise.  If the plot fleshes out as I go and the characters do as well I could see it having a signifficant advantage on its older brothers.  We'll see.

Which boss is Gattsuo again? The boss at Ehmead Hill?

If so, I had absolutely no problems on him. I think I've only had 1-2 issues with boss fights, but I've died once in the game (and that was on Zagi, the first boss of the game).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Glad you´re liking it. I already finished it and can safely say that the game only gets better, way better (my opinion, at least).

Coming from disappointment with the Final Fantasy series, ToV has rekindled my love for JRPGs. If it wasn´t for a few games I need to finish, I would play it all again ( I still will someday).

I love the characters, it´s the best thing about it. The story does nothing ground-breaking but the characters make it all good. The battle system is great too. Deep, but leads you step-by-step.

I didn´t have that much trouble with Gattuso, I killed him the first time (on normal), but I did finish with only Yuri alive. And yes, the other bosses aren´t as hard as him.

As for the audio, I really liked it. I specially like the music for a city (I think it´s Mantaic).

To finish, just sit back and enjoy a great, great game.

He's incredibly easy on easy, but unless you are overleveled (I was level 13), just incredibly lucky, or better than 90% of the gamers on the internet, he's a bitch on Normal.

Hmm, yeah, that adjusting difficulty is awesome. On the 2nd playthrough you unlock "Unknown" which is just unbelievable.

Anyway, if this was a James Bond movie, you wouldn't even be to the opening credits yet....just wait, lol. I told you it was the best Tales game, and I wasn't kidding. You're gonna like it, at the very least. Doesn't even get good until the story starts. The first 20 or so hours are all character development, like the first season of Bleach. It might seem a little slow paced, but that's directly attributed to its anime-like design, which is followed as closely as I've seen in this game.

Also, yes, by the end of the game, you'll have that opening theme song as your ringtone, lol!

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Also, if you're talking about the Wolf boss, he kicked my ass all around, I had to power level, lol, didn't adjust difficulty for him, but shoulda.

Hell I was level 16 when I got there and to that point in the game had thought all battles were a breeze.  I was so caught by surprise when Yuri died, that I didn't even know how to switch characters yet and therefore they all died.  I felt pretty stupid being so unprepared.

Sadly, I started playing Fable 2 shortly after I got through the next section of Tales and haven't gotten back in to TOV yet.  Damn my "no time" problems!!

Its insulting that you've played this game and I can't get it.

My hate for you is strong.

Btw the first season of Bleach was great because of the development, though it kinda lost its way with a bunch of filler in the middle.

Tease.

Yeah, it's the wolf boss.  The trick I found was to free run around to dodge his attacks, but even then I barely pulled through.  I only tried it on easy afterword, and found I could kill him with no deaths and most of my MP left on all characters.

Also Bleach sucks all the way through IMO.  If you want a good mainstream anime watch the 2 seasons of Geass.

Nice impressions all around Naz. I absolutely love this game.

This boss was a pain but I found a fairly easy way to kill it (just make sure you have plenty of gels also). I just kept my distance from him and hit him with Azure Edge. Then I'd wait for him to charge at me and quickly move out of the way and just kept blasting Azure Edge (Overlimit works wonders for this), occasionally reviving a downed team member as well or restoring HP/TP.
