Forums - Sony - Hot Shots Golf 5 Gets Four 9's From Famitsu

famitsu is good for news, sales, basically everything EXCEPT for reviews.

Yes you're so right. The Japanese complain about the scores of Trusty Bell for instance, which were according to them "overrated", ask Y-Koron. Same with Square Enix publishments, except of FFXII they overrate their games too much and mostly in the West you can withdraw about 20% of the total score.

@Windbane, you want a few examples? Well DQS is one for instance, Children of Mana for the DS got 10/10/8/8, a very good example of "what in earth were they thinking".

At least I have the guts to say that even Nintendo games are overrated, I don't see PS fans doing that around here with their own games, now would they?

I always rate Famitsu scores highly. HSG has removed another hurdle from being a big seller - we'll see how the public respond in just 3 days!

How can Final Fantasy games be overrated by any single publication considering they get extremely high reviews from almost everyone?

I'll give you DQS (what was it rated?) and Children of Mana, however.

Edit:  However, it's hard to argue with this list on Wikipedia:

"Only six games so far have received perfect scores. They are listed in chronological order.

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, Nintendo, for Nintendo 64)
  2. Soul Calibur (1999, Namco, for Dreamcast)
  3. Vagrant Story (2000, Square Co., Ltd., for PlayStation)
  4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2002, Nintendo, for Nintendo GameCube)
  5. Nintendogs (2005, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)
  6. Final Fantasy XII (2006, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2)

Games that received a near-perfect score of 39 include:

  1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991, Nintendo, for Super Famicom)
  2. Virtua Fighter 2 (1995, Sega, for Sega Saturn)
  3. Ridge Racer Revolution (1995, Namco, for PlayStation)
  4. Super Mario 64 (1996, Nintendo, for Nintendo 64)
  5. Tekken 3 (1998, Namco, for PlayStation)
  6. Cyber Troopers Virtual On Oratorio Tangram (1999, Sega, for Dreamcast)
  7. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (2001, Sony Computer Entertainment, for PlayStation 2)
  8. Final Fantasy X (2001, Square Co., Ltd., for PlayStation 2)
  9. Resident Evil (2002, Capcom, for Nintendo GameCube)
  10. Dragon Quest VIII (2004, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2)
  11. Gran Turismo 4 (2004, Sony Computer Entertainment, for PlayStation 2)
  12. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (2005, Konami, for PlayStation 2)
  13. Kingdom Hearts II (2005, Square Enix and Buena Vista Games, for PlayStation 2)
  14. Dead or Alive 4 (2005, Tecmo, for Xbox 360)
  15. Ōkami (2006, Capcom, for PlayStation 2)
  16. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (2007, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)"
Gotta love when Ridge Racer used to be highly viewed.  It was my favorite racing game then, and only surpassed by Midnight Club and Mario Kart now.

I stopped listing to their reviews after Nintendogs got four 10's =/

This looks like it plays just like every other version of HotShots. In fact it pretty much looks like the pervious HotShots just with better graphics and creepy realistic looking anime characters.

Don't get me wrong, I love the anime style golf games, Infact Hotshots is the only game I own for my PSP. But I never understood why on earth people made this game out to be so much better then Mario Golf or PangYa. They all play exactly the same. At least PangYa on the PC lets you interact with other people in a MMO environment.

Not to be unfair, but given that Nintendogs is almost certainly on its way to being the best selling non-bundled game of all time, I'm not sure that their reviews were inappropriate. Not your cup of tea, perhaps, but clearly a lot of people like that game. A whole lot of people.

Is it still selling well?  It's about 1.2 million away from Gran Turismo 3 and San Andreas level.

In any case its the best reviewed game of the PS3 so far in Japan .

Nintendogs was the ninth best selling game this week for all platforms, in its 100th week of release. It's selling about 100,000 copies in America per month alone. It's basically finished in Japan, but it's still selling reasonably well in Europe too (perhaps 30-40k a month?)

Heh, then I guess it will make it past those 2 games.  I'm not sure how many of those Mario/Pokemon games weren't bundled, though...you might be right about Nintendogs ending up the highest selling non-bundled game.

Anyway, go Hotshots 5 on PS3!  As Diomedes1976 states, it is the best revieweed game in Japan.  Predictably, the reviewer is being attacked, heh.  I do love this forum, for some reason...

As I pointed out a whole back, it was "effectively" bundled in Australia.

Buy a DS, get a free copy of Nintendogs (your choice which). I don't think its still running though (will check) - I remember it being relevant when the DSPhat was selling.

I hate to insult our fair and noble land but I doubt that made any difference at all to the overall numbers...
