Of course there are examples of bad use of motion controls.
I remember playing call of duty 3. A lot of times I would be beside a tank, or something else that required me to use motion controls to plant a bomb. Most of it would go along just fine until I needed to pull the pin.
Image my virtual soldier, just standing there. The wall of smoke beggining to dissipate from the smoke bomb I used to cover me planting a bomb. Enemy soldiers are firing at me. My virtual soldier is just standing there, staring at the bomb.
In reality, I am sitting on my couch, spastically pushing forward and pulling back the nunchuck at different speeds and angles. I am trying to find the right way to move the nunchuck so my soldier will pull the pin. I am also yelling "Pull the mother-******* god-**** pin you ***hole."
Yea, that is a bad example of motion controls.

Everyone loves the idea of the Wii. The idea of a totally immersive experience. The idea of games that are more like kickball and less like Tetris.

LESS LIKE TETRIS????
dude saying anything negative about tetris is showing your utter lack of understanding of how gaming has evolved...
Tetris = reason many many many gamers got interested in the first place....
OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO
You know I used to think that fanboy/girlism was wierd. Then I watched the elections this year. Same damn thing!
OT
Yeah I don't enjoy playing games on the wii but i have never liked nintendo's games anyway. The only game I like is SSB....and I enjoyed melee more than brawl (I was in college then so that might have made the difference).
I think the article made good points, I do think the wii is disapointing but you could write a similar article about the 360 or the PS3...
And many have. Nintendo folk are just very sensitive now that their console is back on top. You can't criticize it, to them its perfect because it brought the glory back to nintendo.
I do hope that games don't go the way of the Wii because I don't enjoy wii games and I would be sad if there was no more resistance 2 or fable 2 or Fallout 3.

Are you serious?
If it somehow isn't obvious, the reason Wii owners are so defensive is because the Wii-hating is so extreme. Did we see this sort of behavior during the PS1 or PS2? I don't think so.
As for the 360 or PS3, there aren't nearly as many articles written against it. The fact is, the majority that are vocal about gaming prefer the HD consoles, which is why there are so many more written against the Wii.
By the way, have you seen how much whining / crying there was about Wii Fit or Wii Music or anything of the sort "destroying gaming?" Talk about sensitive.
And yes, there is plenty of fanboy/girlism outside of gaming. It isn't anything new
I think the Wii is pretty much a failure in almost every way save for the one that counts. It's making craploads of money, so game over from a sales perspective. But the games don't seem to be much better than the Gamecube games, it's this promise of interactivity that attracts people. I was never a fan of the Wiimote, I remember expressly calling it nothing but a waggle version of an A button. Someone was eventually gonna go down this path, so I can't be too angry about the Wii in that regard. I just think people are being misled, beneath the shimmer of Immersion! and Innovation!, the Wii ain't all that, or at least not much different than the Cube. Except of course, in the one area - the bottom line.

There are (very) few games on the PS3 or XBox 360 that are not just incremental updates on previous generation games, where the primary improvement is better graphics; and in some cases the games are just incremental updates on Playstation 1 or N64 games with better graphics. I'm not saying this to bash the PS3 or XBox 360 either ...
From what I have seen, game design hit a plateau sometime between (about) 1998 and 2001 and we have been forced to revisit (basically) the same game with enhanced graphics several times by now. The Wiimote may not have delivered on its initial hype, but it has gotten people to start thinking about game development beyond how many polygons are being displayed to screen or how "advanced" your AI and physics are.

Well basically, it helped to remind people that graphics can't ever overtake gameplay in importance. But does diverting attention away from better graphics to waggle improve things all that much. I mean aside from the Stock Nintendo gems have they changed things THAT much? I mean really, a lot of games that utilize waggle is just a simple remapping of face buttons, and alot of times the new controls can be annoying, changing a simple thing into a minor annoyance. Basically I think it gets old quick. Of course, you can't go by casuals that may or may not stop playing after their wonderment has faded. A lot of core players like it, and I'm happy for them. But using waggle doesn't necessarily make people think about revolutionizing game development, a lot of times developers just find a way to make old stuff work with a new controller. Just seems like progress for the sake of, I can only take awaggle in very small doses and then I need a controller.

I have a bit of a head-ache so I didn't read the article fullly, I enjoyed the first part that I did read though, however once I got to the part about people buying the Wii for a dream of something I kinda knew the writer went into a subjective argument.
I could pull my anecdote and say: "Well most people who buy the Wii played it at their friends/families house and enjoyed it. In fact my mom... bla bla bla."
>.> I'm going to start paying more attention to the sales charts now. ^_^
I'm Unamerica and you can too.
