Forums - Gaming - Why do we really buy games?

Once I have committed to a system, I rarely buy another. But my gaming habits are pretty eclectic, even more so this generation. My bread and butter is JRPG's along with survival horrors and action/adventure games like Prince of Persia and DMC. This generation I am much more open to FPS's, platformers, and just about anything else. I can get sick of the same-old franchises (which is why I don't like Nintendo who more or less releases the same games every generation just revamped a little). There are plenty that I have stuck with though like MGS, FF, Suikoden, Xenosaga, DMC, Prince of Persia, etc. It is just about balancing the old with the new (which is why i am glad Sony is working overtime to make new IP's).

I would pick up a 360 over the Wii because Microsoft is doing a much better job at delivering "new" games, not just another Mario game, ANOTHER Mario game, another Zelda game, and another Metroid game.

Nintendo releases the same games every generation just revamped a little?  I am somewhat flabbergasted that anyone would even dare to make such an assertion.  Consider the most famous of Nintendo's legendary series:  Mario.

NES:  Super Mario Bros.

NES again:  Super Mario Brothers 3.  Please explain how this is "the same game just revamped a little".  It does have Mario jumping on enemies and smashing bricks, yes, but it also has a world map, Tanooki suits, items, and depth (by which I mean you can drop down behind certain panels).

SNES:  Super Mario World.  Please explain how this is "the same game just revamped a little".  It does have Mario jumping on enemies, and yes, there are a few things he still smashes with his head.  It also has Yoshi, those colored bricks, simple 3d stuff like the fences you swap sides on, and overall many new gameplay mechanics.

N64:  Mario 64.  If I have to explain the many, many ways in which this is a totally new Mario game compared to its predecessors, then you have no right to comment on Nintendo, having no real knowledge of it.

GC:  Super Mario Sunshine.  You can say a lot of bad things about the FLUDD, including that it's (arguably) a gimmick, but there's no denying that it created totally new gameplay that this game used very extensively.

Wii:  Super Mario Galaxy.  Just from the preview videos, I can say with utmost confidence that this is not 'basically the same game' as ANYTHING yet on a console, let alone any other Mario game.

I would honestly like to get your rebuttal to my statements.  But if you come back with "But they all have Piranha Plants lol" I will take that as a concession.

Around the Network

I was discussing with one friend the other day that the Mario proper series IS one of Nintendo's franchises that does see a lot of innovation. Sorry I didn't mention that.

Metroid and Zelda you could say the same, since they changed quite a bit when the moved to the GC and N64 respectively, but since then the games have stuck to essentially the same formula. The Metroid and Zelda franchises along with the Smash Bros. franchises stay pretty fun, but I can't help but feeling that they currently rely to much on the same formula. Nintendo seems to be making all of its gambles this time around with the casual market games, the one area where only a small percentage of the games appeal to me. I remain hopeful for Smash though, since the jump from the original to Melee was a FANTASTIC one.

Mario Party and Mario Kart and the Mario (fill in the blank here) games are the worst, since many of the offering on the GC were actually the worst in the history of the series (I am looking at you Mario Party and Mario Tennis). Mario Golf was pretty good though.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I see. I concede that the control schemes for Metroid and Zelda have been more or less similar since they went 3D, but that's not to say that the two series really stagnated.

Zelda OoT was followed my Majora's Mask -- a crazy experimental game IMO; then Wind Waker, also a bold move that many questioned; and finally (for now) Twilight Princess, which -- although the Light World/Dark World thing is hardly new to Zelda -- still added a lot to the franchise.

Metroid Prime was followed by MP2:Echoes, which, although derided by some, was certainly not simply "more of the same". We'll see if MP3 keeps things fresh (I believe it will). In all honesty though I must say that Metroid is probably the most vulnerable to your claim.

As for Mario Party, I never really got into it, nor do I have much direct knowledge, but if they were all the same dumb thing then why would used copies of Mario Party 5 cost the same (or MORE!) than used copies of Mario Party 6 or 7?

I don't see Mario (insert sport here) as terrible because (a) it added an original Mario-flavored take on each sport and (b) look at Madden and tell me they're derivative. Now if they start to be LIKE Madden I'll consider burning my Nintendo Club card.

Anyway, in sum, I just don't see evidence that Nintendo is letting its flagship titles go stale at all, aside maybe from Pokemon. (*Waits, cringing, to see if flamers pop out of the woodwork.*) Even if I were to concede (which I don't) that the sports titles are abominations, they are a sign that Nintendo is trying to expand its horizons.
