Possible successfull MMO, yeah

Contender to Wow ? Doubtfull, noone is really playing in the same league as Blizzard these days. Heck expect Wow suscribers to rise to 13 millions or so in the next 6 months....

That's what people said about Everquest and the like before WoW.

Still, a better failing of this new MMO is that Star Wars is too niche to beat WoW.

Wow is nothing like Everquest ( I played both extensively).

Blizzard spends more on Wow yearly than Sony used to on EQ in 4 years and you see it in the game...

Niche isn't the issue, you could argue Star Wars has more mainstream appeal than Wow...( Wow is still only known within the gamer community).

But heck, how many MMOs aside from Wow do commercial on TV ? :P

Heck I can buy Wow T-shirts at my local mall...

I'm not saying the games are identical, I'm saying they occupy the same space in the industry (MMO) and one usurped the (albeit fading) popularity of the other.

WoW is also not "still only known within the gamer community."  I don't know if you're around many people but a LOT of people recognize WoW some who have played it, some who have experimented, but most who at least know one person in the other two categories.  It is highly recognizeable by anyone under the age of 25 as sad as that is...

Why is it sad ?

WoW ROCKS!

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

huzzah. A good SW MMO. I like Bioware they make good games. Also I like the art direction. Low polies, but with style. Though the graphics are simple. If they improve the style a bit, use less generic models(obviously) this should be able to run on alot of systems. Being a true contender to WoW. I would put my money more on this than WoW.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Without considering quality, this game has one major advantage over most of the games that have entered into the MMO market over the past 5 years ... It does not have a fantasy setting!

You might be shocked to learn that there are non-Fantasy MMOs already.

Isn't there a MMO for Star Wars already? There should just be one.

Star Wars Galaxies.  It's on that list I posted above for Happy.

Yeah... and it was the biggest screwup in the history of MMOs.

Man this game could be amazing. Star Wars is simply perfect to be an MMO, with a vast universe with thousands of planets.

I hope they let you have your own ship and have space dogfights. So amazing.

Didn't Star Wars Galaxies try all that and fail miserbly?  I haven't played it but I've only heard bad things about it, even from the people that worked on it.

I never played it , however according to people who did, Star Wars Galaxies was a great game when it came out and had a consistent 300k active subscribers. But then Sony took control over the game's development (I don't know if it's true), made some ABYSMAL changes that the players hated and worsened the game, leading to cancellation of several subscriptions (and I mean alot, around 35-40% cancelled at one time just after one of those mistakes).

Now the userbase of the game is no doubt below 100k, but Star Wars Galaxies was a huge success: It sold over 1 million copies and made alot of dough from the subscriptions. It was definitely more profitable than Kotor, for example.

The Sci-Fi setting is still pretty much untapped though, not many good Sci-Fi MMOs around.

The only great Sci-Fi MMO is EVE Online but it's VERY Hardcore, so it will never have a big userbase. There's some decent-ish ones like Tabula Rasa and Star Wars Galaxies, but not much more than that.
