The US is a center right country that favors divided gov't, ie one party in the executive and the opposing in the Congress. That said, let us examine something for a moment.  If Obama wins the presidency he will most likely have a filibuster proof Democrat controlled Congress.

The US would face liberal proposals and legislation not seen for decades or even longer.  The worst part of this Obama-Pelosi-Reid trinity is that most do not care that Pelosi and Reid's Congress is even worse than President Bush when it comes to approval ratings.

Congressional approval today is 14.3% whilst Bush stands at 24.6%.  http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/

We all know how "successful" Pelosi has been ;) so can the US really afford a possible 8 years of unchecked extreme liberalism?

A filibuster only pertains to the Senate, so it would be a filibuster proof Senate. It also is a distinct possibility. With the exclusion of Collins, who has been consistently polling above 50%, the Democrats could pick up eleven Senate seats. McConnell has been hovering around 50%, and Chambliss and Musgrove have both been consistently two points or so below 50%. The Republicans are likely going to lose in AK, NM, CO, NH, NC, VA, and OR. I am not prepared to make a prediction in MN. The inclusion of a third-party candidate has made the race an interesting one to watch.

I agree a president with a rubber-stamp congress can be a dangerous thing. For example, look at the damage done in the six years Bush had a rubber-stamp congress.

y'know it's arguable that the republican dominated congress was the one to start the downward tumble of the congressional approval ratings.

As you can see, before the congress actually changed sides in 2006, the Republican congress approval rating was not much better.  Not to mention that of those currently in congress the democrats have a higher approval rating than do the republicans.

...

Well as long they don't take McCain and Pallin nothing against McCain in fact it would be better for my country if he wins but the tought that Pallin might be president is horrfying.

Are we still a center-right country if we elect a liberal?  It's happened before.

Do we still favor divided government when we vote for the same party to control each branch?  It's happened before.

Everybody always hates Congress.  People elect a president, so they like him at first.  People elect a couple Congressmen in their state, and assume the rest are corrupt assholes.  It's always been that way.

Yes, we are still a fairly centrist nation with a slight tilt towards the right. The split between our two main political parties is not as great as the split between the major political parties in other nations. Americans, for the most part, are fairly similar on most issues.

Well they shouldn't have voted for Bush if this is what the people wanted.  During his first term even, Bush usurped so may legislative and judicial powers that it was just plain scary.

At least McCain will do a better job than Bush in terms of transparency, but Republicans as a whole have failed the entire nation, time and time again.  I don't think it is physically possible for the Democrats to do any worse even if they took over the entire Senate and House.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Today's secret word is: Realignment

Plus, you forget we had republ congress and executive for 6 of the 8 years of Bush. That is why the secret word may be a very real possibility.

lastly, even if the democrats get 60 seats, don't think you will get 60 votes for cloture every time. Some of the Moderate dems will not toe the party line for extreme legislation.

Like liberal and conservative or democrat and republican really matter after they elected. Usually it doesn't. Both parties tend to be moderate anyways.

I think the real question is can the country handle Palin for 8 yrs in any form haha. I feel bad for Alaska as it is but to force her upon Americans is worse than taxation without representation.

What we are left eventually with is no good choice. The good choice was Ron Paul but we didn't choose him. Of course that powers that be are would never allow a true person of change to ever hit the "throne". So instead we are left with the 2 candidates that say they will change anything but once they get there they will simply be a moderate like every other president in the last few elections.

What America really needs right now is someone who will be tough with them. Not Obama or McCain that tries to tell Americans that for some odd reason none of this is their fault or whatever. In reality it is our fault for being so easily manipulated. Sure a liberal controlled government isn't good but nor is a McCain and Palin as the top 2. There is no good choice because they aren't going to do to America what it needs. They are going to do to it what it doesn't need mainly because of the media.

What does it need? A swift new setup of the capitalist system because I don't think its hard to see how its flawed. Also needs to practice military isolationism such that we are focusing using money at home and country defense while we use peace and diplomacy to HELP solve the world's problems instead of enforcing our culture upon others because WE think it's right. Third we need reform of the education system which is obviously flawed as there are numerous other countries that do better than us. And fifth and the most important one is to create a self sufficient energy system within America. The use of numerous alternative energies such as solar, wind, geothermal, and tidal to bring numerous jobs to America and solve the energy crisis.

This is what America needs. Maybe its a daydream of an ideal president but this is what we truly need but thx to the media causing running for president to be so pricey we'll never be able to get someone like that to run.

anybody ever noticed that supermajorities (1 party controls both legistlative and executive) always leads to more problems than when power is divided?
