Forums - Sony - David Reeves: This Christmas Not That Critical

Every holiday season is as important, regardless of this year, next year, or the following year.
Hardwares and softwares are directly porportional.

If sales are great this year, the next year will reap from that. You don't wait until the next year and suddenly some miracle happen.

That said, it's very important to pick up wind fast early on. The wind might slow down after it picks up but the chance of it starting slow and then pick up high wind is much less propable.

Sony CEO's said so many "wrong" things that I wonder if they get any repercusion for saying such.

He has a pretty good point, as Christmas 08 will decide which console will going to be the long term winner.

Even if one of the consoles has a good showing at Christmas, that still does not mean it has won. We're still only in the first few years of each console.

P.S. Nice job Nintendo fanboys for finding a way to put a negative spin on it. Keep up the good work!

Im sorry but im starting to find everything you say to be pointless and irrelevant MontanaHatchet (if that is your real name!) because every argument you start generally ends in "which Nintendo fanboy is going to deny me now", "Nintendo fanboys will probably rip this apart" or the good old argument of arguing something which has absolutely no decisive proof yet. The 'negative spin' that you stated isnt from a Nintendo fanboy argument, its a general dig at Sony's PR of late which isnt a fanboy argument, even Sony fans must understand that the PS3 is in a low sales position at the moment due to a series of mistakes. No doubt the behemoth will come back but arguing for the sake of arguing and claiming that Nintendo fanboys are contradicting every statement to come from Sony is a bit daft really.

Oh and there is nothing funnier than people who slate fanboys in a way that just highlights their own biased opinions and arguments. Bias is always going to exist, everything in the world is influenced by bias, becoming aggressive because of it isnt going to do jack all really. The most bias arguments that have come on the charts of late are the Sony fanboys who take offence at every criticism of their company even though the issues raised are nothing more than generalised comments at the strange stance that Sony is taking.

Let me go on the offensive. I've gotten pretty tired of some of the stupidity that's gone on on the internet (these forums included), and being that the summer directly translates to 'shitty, miserable weather' for the midwest, let me unleash my wrath onto teh interwebs, so excuse my capitalized swearing below.

Ahem.

Anyone that believes that any Christmas period is non-important to a retail, entertainment product IS A FUCKING MORON AND SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THEIR JOB. Thank you.

Has anyone ever paid attention to sales reports or news articles about such things? What's that big holiday season where retail outlets and sales are crucial to the bottom lines of every big retail chain in the US (and possibly the world, if your spot on it has turned a religious holiday into a celebration of capitalism.) and can make or break profit margins for shareholders? Yeah, that one.

The gaming market has always been a thing of momentum. You either have momentum and you succeed (or at least become/stay profitable, which is just as important from the corporate side of an issue.) or you lose momentum and you fail. There is no way that you will see the PS3 win any form of market share game if they do not rally this Christmas. As it's been stated, if developers see that they need to move to developing on the 360 or Wii, or go multiplatform with their games to make sure they stay afloat, they are not going to stand on board a burning ship and hope that the ocean water puts out the fire while they're sinking.
This Christmas is probably the MOST important for it, because it's new enough that it can establish momentum. When you have competition in a market, you need to separate yourselves from them or lead the market. Sony needs to push themselves above the 360 now, or never again this generation for the US shores.

Now, this means nothing from a purely gaming standpoint as it is now. If you enjoy Sony's first party games like GT and Ratchet and Clank and the newer stuff that is coming out to it, those things are going to come regardless. They will become this gen's Gamecube, where there are still a decent number of games on it people will enjoy, but it will not be the spotlight of the show. In no way a bad thing from a player's perspective, as systems like the Dreamcast and Gamecube before have shown that there will still be enjoyable games to be had on it. You will still get your gaming value out of that price tag. Things will still arrive on the PS storefront, Sony offerings will still come to it, and a lot of the good 3rd party multiplatform titles will still be there for the gamers, the 'old guard'.

Get over yourselves a bit, and try not to post things as if the way you see them is the only way. The Wii is not a kiddy system and is made to appeal to a wider crowd. The PS3 and 360 will have great games on them that appeal to the masses, and push for innovation as well as graphics. If you disagree? Great, feel free to post your stupidity and disagree. I'm not talking merely from my opinion but from a logical standpoint as far as sales goes (on the corporate side) and from the games themselves (from the gamer view of things) I just hope that there's enough intelligent gamers out there that understand that the world doesn't revolve around them. Once you see there is a much bigger picture to the gaming scene than the narrow window you might focus on with your own gaming habits, you might find more things that entertain you. Last time I checked, broadening your horizons is a GOOD thing.

Agreed. 1 year behind the 360 turns to 2 years behind the 360, and then 3, and 4, and in 2011 you have been behind the 360 for 5 years and then you gotta make a new system. Of course in that time, great games have come out for the PS3 and many millions of people have enjoyed them, and many 3rd party developers have made a profit. Waiting for momentum to build is like watching paint dry. The momentum is either THERE or its NOT. The longer the momentum is not there, the more likely it WONT be there, because 3rd party devs move to greener pastures.
