Sony needs to pay their CEOH's to shut up. PS3 could really use some non-negative press. Really.

If Sony CEO's stop talking we'll lose so much funny news reports, we'll lose the spectacle

It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)
This to me is him completely lacking faith in their first party. Hello! You have Heavenly Sword Lair, Little Big Planet, Home, Uncharted, Killzone 2, Warhawk. But that's not important. What's importent if FF XIII. Wrong. This christmas they'll face halo 3, GTA will launch, SMash Bros. Wiifit, this is a huge christmas, without doubt the biggest in history, and I'm sorry, if they have a poor one, do you really the think the 13% finished FF XIII is going to stand firm as an exclusive? I don't think so. Plus I can't think of a console that changed it's fate 24 months in. I don't care how long term their plan is. In my opinion he is simply covering his butt, they've been acting like the first year don't count, so you might as well throw in the second year too. They'll basically act like this was all according to plan until this thing starts selling strong. And if it doesn't, I'll enjoy listening to their spin doctors tell a new tale.
You know sony fans, I can completely agree that at times it seems like Nintendo fans want to rain all over Sony's parade...but at times like this I'm not sure how you can defend them.
Top level executives should not be saying stuff like this about one of their heavily invested products. If he couldn't say anything better than "Christmas 07 is already lost, but 08 is were its all at" then he shouldn't have said anything at all. Is it so hard to just say "no comment" or "We'll see how it goes" or "We have some strong games coming out at the end of this year and early next year so I have a good feeling about the future?"
You guys can be sony fans all you like, but this guy is a serious dolt. Just cause you like the PS3, doesn't mean you gotta kiss a dimwits feet whenever he says anything.

But it's so much easier and feels so much better to say that he might be right!

"I think each peak is crucial to maximise what you can do, but I don't think this Christmas is necessarily the most critical one - I think that's going to be Christmas 08."
By saying that you asume that he means that this christmas is not important? It really seems that people want to get to him badly. I have heard him say alot stupid stuff and this is not really one of them. This Christmas is important but 08 is more important for the ps3. I believe that Wii will have supply problem and 360,PS3 will sell well. Wii iis going to sell most but with supply problem I dont believe it is going to dominate like its doing now. With maybe 360 price cut people is going to but 360 when they dont find Wii. So its hard to know this early what is going to happen. Its is the first Christmas for Ps3 in Europe so its going to sell. Christmas 08 we will see if ps3 is dead or not. Even if this christmas is more important for ps3 it does not make him ignorant or arrogant. It does not really matter what Sony says people will still twist it to something bad.

I agree the PS3 may be higher than 10mil by then as well, but in all fairness none of the PS3's big name titles so far have done much for its sales and none of these big name franchise exclusives have sold enough games with their last instalments to give the PS3 what it really needs with their far more expensive sequels. There's not a single person I haven't talked to at a single gamestore (clerk or customer) that isn't convince MGS4 is comming to the 360 as well (whether true or not) and if FFXII only sold 5 million on a console with an console instal base of 100 million plus, I don't see FFXIII turning the PS3 around. Gran Turismo is pretty much in the same boat as FFXIII. Also, 30 million might be a bit high, but its not without evidence especially with developers flocking to Nintendo in droves and more games to keep the causal "non-gamer" market snatching them up. |
If you're going to compare then do it right. GT5 MUST be compared to GT3, not 4, same goes for FF. The first release of a series on next gen hardware is a more accurate comparison. Also there HAS NOT been ANY "big" software titles out yet, Motorstorm maybe(it's close to 1 million I think), but not really, it's not in the same boat as MGS4, Ratchet & Clank, GTAIV, GT5, FFXIII, which are all proven series that people are waiting for.
On topic, he is somewhat right if you think of price point. The PS3 "should" be at $399 or less by xmas 08(hopefully $299) and this will have a huge impact on sales, with many AAA titles already available and more on the way. Though in hindsight I wouldn't have recommended he opened his mouth about this. Who the hell is this guy anyways?
This is why I never listen to these jackasses!

You're right that there has never been a price difference this large, but I don't see how that can work to anyone's advantage but Nintendo's. Of course that's just my opinion, but I think it's kind of ridiculous to claim that the THIRD Holiday season is the most important in the generation. |
Actually, if I'm reading the chart right with weekly wasn't the PS2's THIRD holiday season it's biggest? If you look at weekly sales figures at around week 158 the PS2 had the largest sales peak, which is approx 3 yrs, 2 weeks after release. I agree that the PS3 may not have the sales figures of the Wii in units by 08, that's not reasonable, but over the life of the console I think it may have more total. Hopefully, a WiiToo w/HD isn't 6-7 yrs away.

I'm not a Sony Fanboy, but I think he is right, this christmas is not the important one, next year we will know if the Wii succes continue or it goes down and if the 360 warranty solution will help MS to get back on track. I really think that Sony is going to be very tough to defeat. I would like to see microsoft on top... but I don't think it will happen in this generation.

It really depends on what you mean by "big titles" ...
So far the PS3 has had a reasonable number of high-quality exclusive titles and a lot of high-quality multiplatform titles released for a system this early in its life; before many of these games were released there was always discussions of "PS3 Domination starts with -=name of game=-" only after they sold below expectations did they become a "small title"
One of the biggest problems with assuming that 2008 will be better or more important for the PS3 is that the assumption is made based on other assumptions; the assumption of a price cut, the assumption the PS3 will sell well enough to keep its exclusives, and the assumption that certain unannounced or rumored games will be released in time. If you play this game with any of the consoles they will have massive success in the 2008 holiday season (if you assume that third parties will continue increasing support for the Wii from now until holdiay 2008 then the Wii is going to crush the competition in Holiday 2008).
