Forums - Sony - David Reeves: This Christmas Not That Critical

Well Christmas is important, but all he was trying to say is it's not the most important this generation. In all likelihood it's going to be a Nintendo mascacre this holiday season, with the Wii and DS selling far more than any other system. The gap between the PS3 and 360 will be much much closer than the 360 and Wii I believe. I think both the 360 and PS3 will perform better in the holiday season of 2008 after their next round of price cuts and when their lineup of games is more varied. 2007 is important to keep the third parties, but Sony won't be in major trouble there unless the 360 puts up near Wii numbers, which I can't see happening. 2008 will be more important to which system has the real momentum in the console race.

Er... the console that was going to be the long term winner was determined about 3 months ago, when it was apparent that the Wii hype wasn't just going to disappear. The console with the strongest launch months always wins, but hey, hope is good right, so keep on dreaming.

Has there ever been as much of a price difference as there is now between 2 mainstream consoles? I think the console race is far from over and is still in its beginning.

I'm not claiming that the Wii will win by 100 million consoles or anything, I just don't see any realistic chance for a turnaround from the other 2 companies at this point. You're right that there has never been a price difference this large, but I don't see how that can work to anyone's advantage but Nintendo's. Of course that's just my opinion, but I think it's kind of ridiculous to claim that the THIRD Holiday season is the most important in the generation.

It's actually the fourth holiday season. 08 will be number four for the 360.

360 was released in 2006. 2007 was 2. 2008 is 3.

I thought the xbox 360 was released Nov 2005? So 2008 would be the forth holiday season.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

I said this before, but all successful consoles as of yet have shown the same trend in holiday sales. The first year is unpredictive, but there is a very consistent curve from the second year on. The real comparison would be of the PS3 sales in 2007 to the 360 sales in 2006.

To me, this sounds like a:

"The Next Generation of gaming starts when we say so."

statement...

"Christmas is only important when we have OUR games."

Exactly, and in all honesty I'm sure MS and Nintendo would have made similar statements had they been in similar situations this upcomming holiday season.

Doesn't make the statement any less ignorant.

Agreed.

He's right it's not that critical, as long as Sony is shooting for third place in the console wars

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Of course Christmas is critical: it really is profit vs loss time, and I don't think PS3 will survive...

In other words, David Reeves doesn't have any confidence on the PS3. I wonder when Sony will finally own up to their mistakes.

When they are about to launch the PS4.

Just like Nintendo did...
