I'd keep an eye on FreeOrion, an open-source version of the Masters of Orion series:

Does Civilization count? You probably had already played Civ4, but it really couldn't hurt to play it again ;)
Edit: As mentioned below, you certainly couldn't go wrong with Heroes III
The "Heroes of Might and Magic" franchise is worth a look. If I was you, I would select Heroes IV. It was released in 2002, so you should have no problems running it.
In the HoMM series I'd suggest you the third or second, the series went down seriously downhill with the 4th one. It's still fun though.

I admit III is the best of the series, but it did not go "downhill" with the 4th one.

If 3 is the best one then it was the top hence if 4 was worse it went downhill. I also think 4 and 5 were worse than 2, can't say anything about 1 though.

Yes, it did technically do "downhill." I got the impression, however, that you meant there was a precipitous decline in the quality of the games. I suppose that is what I disagree with. The differences between III and IV are subtle.
there's this one, King's Bounty: The Legend, that just came out and apparently IT IS GOOD, you can get it at gamersgate
it doesn't hurt to take a look over abandonware sites and stuff, there's always one game that you have missed!
the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!
Ever play the Civilization cousin "Alpha Centari".
It... expiecially combined with it's expansion "Alien Crossfire" are pretty kick ass.
It's like civization except for a few neat differences. Your technology research is somewhat blind... and more "free market" generally just picking areas to fund and the technology you get being blind from that area....
Also when you get that technology it's up to you to build your units. So you can give your infintry better weapons, or design weaker units that cost less... or units with a lo of defensive power and no offensive power etc.

Battle for Wesnoth is also a LOT of fun. Though fantasy based.
I've been meaning to go back to that game sometime soon. I'm sure the upgrades and changes have been great.
