Forums - Sales - Could Wii become best selling peice of hardware ever?

It depends on what kind of games publishers will release on the WII and most of all what kind of quality (thinking about the fact that there are not many high quality games released so far on the WII). As long it's a mix for hardcore and casual gamers then perhaps, but as soon as they're really start out to develop for casuals only then I think in the end a lot of people are getting bored, me included and sales will drop and never reach the PS2 sales even close.

Its too early to tell, but my first guess would be no. Those are some big shoes to fill. The Wii's hardware is less comparable to its competitors than the PS2's was to its competitors as well. That may not be important considering the market the Wii is aimed at, but it is a factor nonetheless.

Honestly, I don't see where all these claims about the PS2 being a faulty piece of hardware come from. Most people complain about "disc read error" which is from, duh, a dirty disc drive. All I did was clean mine out and it worked like it was brand new. I have two PS2's, one 6 years old and another 5 both of which have had no problems except the disc drive needing to be cleaned. Its not like this doesn't happen with other hardware, like DVD players and CD players. Dust and magnetization interfere with reading the disc, but using a product that cleans it or manually doing it completely solves the problem.

Well, there was a class action lawsuit against Sony for PS2 hardware issues, so it's not as if these are simply anecdotal. I don't personally believe -- based on internet chatter and activity -- that the problem was as bad the recent spat of 360 issues, but it was noticable enough to get Sony in trouble in a public way.

personnal point,

I think Wii can catch PS2 sales numbers.
Or Wii is able to catch the same population of gamers that the PS2 (I really doubt that Wii can appeal to 100% gamers PS2 owners because, for the moment, there are not enought cinematic big franchise name (except from nintendo) on the Wii).
Or Wii is able (as it is doing right now + wiifit) to OPEN the video game market to new gamer that are not supposed to play game : "no-gamer market"
It include : parents/girl/old personn that usually just dont care of video game.

If wii is able to realize, more or less, these 2 points (getting gamers from the previous generation + no-gamers), then yes, Wii will maybe it 150M, even 200M.

no-gamers are not casual gamers but just people that dont care of video games (before Wii ^^)

Time to Work !

Was Draqon Quest Swords the first 3rd party game to have that big of a first week? Was it the biggest of 1st or 3rd?

This has to do with this thread because this could mean more 3rd party games for Wii. And heaven forbid... DQX. That would have to shut down offices, factories, and schools for a week in Japan if DQX is released for Wii.

I don't think Wii will pass PS2 because Nintendo make consoles that last longer than Sony do, so no need to keep buying replacements!

I think DS will though.

Wii will never catch the DS.

There are 5(6?) DSs in our house. Two Wiis. We could at most buy 1 more Wii.

Simply because its a "1 per living room" vrs "1 per person" thing, the Wii will never catch the DS.

I also think there is a real chance the Wii might get an upgrade before the DS does.

...

The Wii can easily catch the PS2. Whether it actually does... is another matter.

QFT, LOL.  I think that Wii won't catch DS, but there are many people (especially in US and some Euro countries) that wouldn't be caught dead with a handheld gaming device.  Business people, college students, single or married people w/o kids are all more prown to buy a home console than a handheld, IMO.  Business travellers in the US don't seem to game on the road the way (I hear) they do in Japan.  They are missing out.

But I still think you are right, that it won't catch DS.  Also remeber that new versions bof handhelds do better than new versions of consoles.  GBColor, Adv, SP, Micro, DS Lite, I think the PSP-2000 is going to do well too.

I honestly can't tell yet, but it looks likely to me. In the end it depends on how well the thing with attracting new gamers goes, and how long the lifespan is.

A lot of people seem to think the lifespan is going to be shorter than normal due to being technologically inferior to the competition, and people will move away from the vastly superior game selection to the better graphics of the other consoles after a year or two. After the PS2 winning over the Xbox and Gamecube, I don't see this happening.

I think it's at least equally possible that the philosophy behind the Wii causes graphics to lose some importance, and the Wii has a substantially longer lifespan than previous consoles. That seems to be what Nintendo is planning, and they've been on a roll the last few years.

The most likely case for the Wii not becoming the #1 best selling piece of hardware of all time is Nintendo getting greedy and releasing a new console too early that is not counted as a remake of the Wii. To me it would be a different console if the games for it didn't work on the original Wii, and I'm assuming most of you agree go with the same definition.

Am I supposed to type some kind of a brilliant recap here? I'm going back to bed, since I got up so early to check the Brawl site. =P

Biggest of 3rd party, but to say a game which is absolutely great?... not really from what I experience so far... GFX are not too good, and the game feels too short. On Amazon Japan the people complain about the game being too short, most people finished it within a 15 hours. One gamer finished the game within 10 hours and calculated that it cost him 600 yen per hour as he paid 6000 yen for it, which is about 36 Euro and 43USD! I paid 55USD for it! Though I doubt they've finished every area in the game with a S rank...

Game is more meant for casuals then for hardcore gamers. So die hard Dragon Quest / RPG fans wouldn't be very much excited about it.
