I am happy that the cinematic era is coming to an end. It was about time.

Firstly, the cinematic era ain't going nowhere, MGS4 released this year, and more and more games with good stories will come out. Who's to say that is coming to an end because some dude from a website said so?

people should realize once and for all that videogames are FOR PLAYING. Not storytelling. The story is just an excuse to involve the user in the game not backwards.

Games are not art. They are entertainment. They can have "artistic" stuff but that's it. They may become art one day but not copying another one (filmmaking).

People shouldn't realize anything because there's no only way to make videogames. There'll be games with zero stories which rely only on their gameplay (which to me feel a bit incomplete). And there'll be games which merge great gameplay with an ellaborate, complex (and, if you want, non-interactive) story. I've been enjoying them since I played my first JRPG, and I'd take them any game over a game with no story.

The bolded paragraph is actually the most intellegent thing said in this entire thread and I agree with it for the most part

This comment is just nuts: "The fact is, Metal Gear and Final Fantasy are not good storytelling videogames. In fact, they're pretty poor."

The author seems to think FF12 and MGS4 are just a bunch of cut-scenes, which makes me think he never played these games. FF12 is one of the giants of the world media culture, a masterpiece brimming with wit, comedy, tragedy and geopolitics, all keyed to a refined and addictive interface and battle system. The MGS series has regularly featured some of the most innovative and dynamic forms of interactivity around -- controller switching, codecs, camera switching, all kinds of craziness.

I completely disagree with the article. Some games gameplay do not really connect to the story (GTA) but for most of them, you just have to forget that you are yourself and let yourself get lost in the story just like you would reading a book. It's not like all heroes in all the books are doing what you want them to do.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

You read a book. You PLAY a videogame. It's about interaction. A 40 minute cutscene in a videogame does not interest me at all. I don't care how awesome the plot is. If I wanted to watch a movie, I'd pop Lord of the Rings in. If I wanted a super-engaging storyline, I'd read a long book. When I play a videogame, I want to have control over the character and have as much interaction as possible.

Metal Gear Solid is an awesome franchise, no sense in denying it. However, I feel that the several hours of cinematics just helped create a convoluted storyline. It was just too much.

I didn't finish it but from what I did read, This is an article I should of wrote. Instead of Artistic and Abstract pixels with the ability to control them, We're getting games that are trying too hard to be movies. This is why I believe gameplay is the most important thing in a game.

I might get flamed for this, it's fitting that the PS3 and 360 are multimedia machines and the Wii is an actual gaming console.

I agree with this statement, interactive movies are less fun. I prefer games with no linear path, not ones where I watch some cutscenes, go down the only path accesible, then watch more cutscenes.

I don't see why anyone would flame you for the second bolded statement.

Nintendo is a gaming company = gaming console.

Sony and Microsoft are technology companies  = multimedia machine

Sony is responsible for one of the greatest storytelling development studios out there, Team ICO.  ;)

Amen to that!
