It is a bit surprising that we don't really discuss the comparisons of any region to Japan, I put that down to the fact that this site has very few, if any, Japanese members.
Wherever the Wii and PS3 are manufactured the price is measured in dollars by the people who manufacture them. It's not that we are converting them into dollars, that is how they are originally worked out. If you compare them to their Japanese prices then we are given the price charged in that country in US $ rather than Yen.
