I agree. I was not that impressed with The Fountain. It's an interesting movie but it's not nearly as engaging as Pi or Requiem.

If you want a good movie, Akum, check out Dirty Pretty Things. I know you're an Audrey Tatou fan.

Indeed, me likey Audrey Tatou.  I'll have to check that one out.

@super_etecoon: I downloaded The Fountain and will watch it probably this weekend.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Hmm, right now: David Lynch, Luis Buñuel, Jean-Luc Godard, Terry Gilliam.

All good choices, though there are still quite a few David Lynch movies and Jean-Luc Godard movies I need to see before I consider myself well-versed in their work.

Cet Obscur Objet Du Desir is one of my favorite French films.

If you don't have any Lynch films at hand, he's got a lot of short films and commercials floating around the YubeTubes that are amazing.  I highly recommend his animated series Dumbland.  He drew it himself and does every voice.  Every episode of Twin Peaks (except the damn pilot) are online too.  http://www.cbs.com/classics/twin_peaks/  The pilot is unimportant though, as long as you know that there was a murder and a body was found and an FBI agent arrived in town to start the investigation.  Shit really gets started in episode 2.

For Godard, good starting points are Breathless and Band of Outsiders, and a good ending point is my favorite Godard film, Week-End.  It's hard to describe, and is kind of about traffic jams, car crashes, and the collapse of capitalism in 1967 France.  Turns out my school's offering a Godard class for my last semester.  Great timing.  I think I have to take it.

The best directors are as follows.
In no order at all

1: Stanley Kubrick. For filming things again and again and again to make sure the editor had versatility when he was editing. This change of approach helped revolutionize the way films are made. He also was one of the pioneers of film as a purely visual experience, such as 2001 et al.

2: Eisenstein for his pioneering the use of the visual montage. Watch The battleship potemkin. Its a true masterpiece.

3: Terry Gilliam for his unrelenting surrealism in Brazil. That film is the best film no-one saw.

4: Leni Riefenstahl. Now I'm not a supporter of what Hitler did at all, but she was so innovative she simply needs to be on the list. Ever been to a rock concert or seen the olympics opening ceremony? Those bombastic over the top forms of mass manipulative nationalism wouldn't exist without her.

5: Orson Welles. Citizen Kane is simply a masterpiece.

I would list more, but I could go on all day.

Most of my favs have already been mentioned. Thank you Akuma for mentioning Kurosawa early on.

Some to add:
Tim Burton
Hideaki Anno (in both animation and live-action)
Satoshi Kon
