The best directors are as follows.
In no order at all

1: Stanley Kubrick. For filming things again and again and again to make sure the editor had versatility when he was editing. This change of approach helped revolutionize the way films are made. He also was one of the pioneers of film as a purely visual experience, such as 2001 et al.

2: Eisenstein for his pioneering the use of the visual montage. Watch The battleship potemkin. Its a true masterpiece.

3: Terry Gilliam for his unrelenting surrealism in Brazil. That film is the best film no-one saw.

4: Leni Riefenstahl. Now I'm not a supporter of what Hitler did at all, but she was so innovative she simply needs to be on the list. Ever been to a rock concert or seen the olympics opening ceremony? Those bombastic over the top forms of mass manipulative nationalism wouldn't exist without her.

5: Orson Welles. Citizen Kane is simply a masterpiece.

I would list more, but I could go on all day.
