SALES growth has continued for games platforms this year and the global economic crisis isn't expected to hamper that going into the Christmas trading period.
Next-generation consoles - Microsoft's Xbox360, Sony's Playstation 3 and Nintendo's Wii - sold a combined 1.2 million units in the first three quarters of 2008 in Australia, according to games analyst Gfk.
This represented a 58 per cent jump in console sales over the same period last year, Gfk said.
It's understood that Nintendo's physical games platform is driving the growth, and for September it represented 70 per cent of all console sales.
One large retailer, which declined to be named, said the Wii was regularly outselling all other consoles combined.
Harvey Norman games manager Jason Williams said the biggest challenge would be ensuring that the Wii didn't suffer the stock shortages that plagued its early life cycle.
Mr Williams said the games console market was experiencing unprecedented growth as the phenomenon penetrated deeper into the mainstream market.
"It's being driven by the Wii, but we can't discount the other consoles, because they are contributing to an overall level of growth that's quite astonishing.
"The market has become this mainstream social, legitimate form of entertainment."
