How about this as a simple definition: Some sort of statistics that account for skills or aspects of a character, and some method of increasing and strengthening those statistics.

Fairly straightforward and covers things pretty well right?  That would mean I would add Monster Hunter, Steambot Chronicles, and Folklore.

Why not just use IGN??

They have all the RPG's currently listed as either RPG's, Action RPG's, Strategy RPG's, etc.

They also have Folklore classified as Adventure and Monster Hunter as Action... Can't find Steambot, maybe I'm spelling it wrong.

Also MLB Power Pros and MLB Power Pros 2008 under that definition.

Of course it fit the definition of RPG before as well.... unless you include that it NEEDS fighting or something.

The game reminds me of Sports Night. Truley brilliant but unpopular because most of the target audience won't pay any attention because it has a sports theme... and the people buying it for the sports them mostly won't get the RPG modes.

So then NHL 09 is a WRPG?  No, it's not.  Let's use at least a little common sense here.

Does NHL 09 have a mode where you play one player and build him up from a  nobody to a star... buying equipment and choosing paths in storylines?  If so... yeah by those definitions.

I as well think Gebx's plan works for now.

wow console jrpgs are really declining in quantity and quality.

I dunno NHL, but FIFA09 has a mode where you create a character and develop him into a star, distributing stat points among some parameters (shoot, passing, speed, etc) and leveling up after some matches, and you gain more EXP the better you play, and ultimately you become the captain of your team and I think you may be called to your national team. Does it count by that definitions?

What are you exactly basing it off of? Have you played all of them yet? Quantity seems solid, quality is subjective.

oh and 2 PS3 Rpgs are published by Sony.

WKC and...?

Outlaw the point is you have no way of distributing some form of statistics to customize your character.  This is the one thing I don't budge on for JRPGs.  You need to have some form of statistical distribution for your character by leveling up. If enough of you argue the point, I may update it, but I will update it for ALL those games that are similar, and I'll get just as much crap from the other side.

Agh, I meant to put "health" after increased in my post.

@ flames_of

And yes, quantity is definetly down from last generation.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

not to mention that jrpgs, and rpgs in general take a long time to make.  I am just glad not all dev teams are like the FF team where they seem to be taking their sweet ass time making 13.

Where did you get four first party JRPGs from MS. Only BD and LO as far as I know were published by them.
