Forums - PC - PC troubles looking for sugestions

My pc is on the frizt and I can no longer play games even old ones. The Witcher, Sacred, Freelancer, Privateer all cause my system to power off. I can get about 1.5 minutes of play on the Witcher and about 10-15 minutes of play out of the Privateer remake. Surfs the internet, Installs programs, and plays vids on WMP all day long no troubles. That leads me to belive its a power supply issue.

Here is what I have:

  • Msi K8n Neo4 Platinum socket 939 Mobo onboard sound is fried
  • Athlon 64 FX60 2.6ghz stock clock
  • 2 gigs ddr400 512x4 stock clock
  • Evga 7600gt stock clock
  • Ultra v-series "500watt" PS single +12v rail 28 amps 336watts
  • Sound Blaster PCI card
  • SATA HD
  • IDE dvd burner

The power supply should be plenty for this setup and tests fine with the tester I have but I dont have anyway to test it under load. What I'm wondering is if the powersupply is crapping out due to capacitor ageing. I've read that power supplys loose some of their wattage capacity as the capacitors age under load. Its about 4 years old and the 7600gt worked with it fine for about 2 years.

So what do ya think new power supply time or is it a video card issue?

Replace the power supply, 90% chance its that.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

Thats what I'm hoping. I really wanted to stretch this PC to AM3.

Could be virus/spyware! Try Spybot and a free anti-virus prog.
Clean up your PC with CCleaner.com
Do you have lots of things running in the background? Too many startup progs?
Memory might be streched if so.

sooo.. did you ever find out what the problem is/was?

I just saw this post. I had a roommate in college that had this problem too. It was over heating problems. Run your computer with the case sides off, and a box fan blowing in. If it runs the programs without shutting down you know that is the issue. Then you can get some new pc fans/heat sinks, re-run cables, and clean up dust. You might end up needing a new case. Good luck

Consoles: Atari 5200, NES, SNES, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3

Nope. I'm trying the power supply first. I just got laid off a couple of weeks ago so I have to wait till I get a paycheck from my new job. The good news is that my new job pays better so I might get to fully upgrade my PC quicker than I planed.

Edit: Problem fixed. There was a good bit of cat hair IN the CPU heatsink that was not apparent untill I removed the fan.  I also reapplied themal paste to the cpu.
