Some experts estimate, that without the bailout, the cost of it would have been triple the cost of the bailout.
The thing is, that creating the trashbank, leads the people who had risky loans, to lose their homes etc., where they had the loans for. If the trashbank wouldn't have been formed, people with not-risky loans, would lose their fortune aswell (and the savings would have gone with the bankcrupties). I see people complain about the wall street getting saved because of this, but who really are getting saved, are the normal middle-class people.
If the market would suddenly saturate from houses that are auctioned for the debts, the price would go even lower and people would still have their debts left. Now, the people who would buy the cheap appartments would be the wall street people.
Now, no matter how this would have turned out, the wall street people would have won anyways.
The thing that really would have helped, would have been to vote for people, who wouldn't have let this happen. But, as we know, the public is stupid.
