Forums - Gaming - Moore & Bell: We want Final Fantasy on the Xbox 360

=====>     And me, I dont want Final Fantasy on the Xbox360 ...

http://www.siliconera.com/2007/07/16/moore-bell-we-want-final-fantasy-on-the-xbox-360/

In two separate chats I asked Jeff Bell, Corporate Vice President of Global Marketing, and Peter Moore the head of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment division if they could have one third party Japanese franchise on the Xbox 360 which would they pick. Mr. Bell immediately responded with Final Fantasy. Mr. Moore let out an optimistic roar for Mario and I mentioned that since it’s Nintendo's that is probably not going to happen. After Mario, Mr. Moore picked Final Fantasy. Mr. Moore said he would “go all the way to Japan” to make Final Fantasy an exclusive on the Xbox 360 and he mentioned that there have been talks about bringing Square-Enix’s RPG series to the Xbox 360.

Mr. Bell seems more enthusiastic about seeing Final Fantasy on the Xbox 360. “I think now it’s very clear we are here to stay and that we are going to sell an awful lot of consoles globally. I don’t think we have to be quite as persuasive as we needed to in the past. You can see that with our line up that we have available now. We have a lot of third party exclusives and we are very proud of that. How far [would we go to bring Final Fantasy to the Xbox 360]? I think what we would like to do is convince anyone they are going to make more money by partnering with us than they will by spending the money developing and partnering with the entire industry.” If part of Final Fantasy XIII came on the Xbox 360 Mr. Bell said, “that would be a start”.

In a candid chat Mr. Bell acknowledges that the Xbox 360 isn’t selling well in Japan, even though there are RPGs on the console. “We are not happy with our situation in Japan. We’ve got a great team though. Sensui-san is doing a great job at making things better. We launched Blue Dragon and our sales have doubled. Now granted that’s a thousand a week, so that’s not enough. We are at least we are making progress. We hope that we double again when we do Lost Odyssey. We are very happy about Trusty Bell or Eternal Sonata coming to the platform. What we got to do is win over the confidence of the third party publishers that they can bring the great titles that are Japanese inspired and continue to grow the install base and have a console for everyone.”

Besides Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey the Xbox 360 has other RPGs coming out this year including Bioware’s Mass Effect.

I asked Mr. Moore if he felt that Lost Odyssey is a competitor to Final Fantasy XIII. “I think Sakaguchi-san certainly has a competitive spirit in his mind. I think he would like to see it do very well and compete with Final Fantasy. But we needed Lost Odyssey to be Lost Odyssey. I think they (the Playstation crowd) are going to look at Lost Odyssey as is in the spirit of Final Fantasy.”

On other Xbox 360 RPGs I asked Mr. Moore about the status of Blue Dragon 2 and he said, “It’s a rumor”. On Infinite Undiscovery Mr. Moore said, “I haven’t seen the game recently, but think it’s going well. I haven’t been to Japan in awhile. I’ll be in Japan in September and I’ll probably have a look at it then. ” Will we get to see it September? “I’ll know more I get there.

Lets home not. I really don't want to buy a 360 just to play FF. I just hope ff13 is locked into the ps3. x fingers!

  Unleash The Beast!

End of 2011 Sales: Wii = 90mil, 360 = 61mil, PS3= 60mil

Final fantasy wont leave PS3 as square is very loyal to japanese gamers and the 360 sales in japan isn't gunna go up while its still on PS3. it might help sales in US but nothing is sure as we need to see sales of a good JRPG on the 360 in the US to see if the 360 userbase even wants JRPG's.

Multiplatform is fine. But I dont think the 360 is doing well enough to warrent exclusives like that, that will come in 5 years.
Likely we wont see FF13 on the PS3 in NA till 2009.
3years after that is 2012.

The PS3 is probibally gonna be so far ahead of the 360 by that time. (becuase the PS3 sales are starting to surpass the 360) I wont guarentee the PS3 outselling the PS3. but there's a 90% chance there will be more PS3's than 360s at that time. Why make a game, for a console, that wont be buying the games in their home audiance. (japan, due to the lack of consoles sold there) And then the #2 console in the #2 region. So basically they will be selling to around 1/2 the 'fanbase' as if they did it on the PS3 agian. Also doing it on the PS3 agian, has benefits on it's own, due to familarity with hardware.

I fly this flag in victory!

I wouldn't guarantee the PS3 outselling the PS3 either.

Is it really that unexpected that the PS3 would temporarily take the lead over the 360 when it has just been dropped in price? That's like saying the 360 will be far ahead of Wii in the future if it temporarily overtakes it when Halo3 drops.

Final Fantasy is popular outside Japan so I can see the benefit of this game going to 360, but you are right about the unproven JRPG userbase on the 360 so far in the US. The coming months are very telling with Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey coming out over here.

I still believe FF XIII will stay PS3 exclusive but there might be spinoffs released later on the 360.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Even though MS wants FF's, and they have already had FFXI, there are quite a few possibilities:

A Crystal Chronicles-esque Final Fantasy spinoff, with the FF name. If the Gamecube can get a Final Fantasy, the better-selling (overall) X360 should get something like this.

Old(er) Final Fantasies to Xbox Live Arcade. You could do co-op even, since FF4 and 6 supported multi-play. If there was a way to get 1-6 on XBLA for download, Square would stand to make huge money, and Microsoft would have a virtual library of Final Fantasy history

An eventual port of FFXII and so on. FFXI came to 360, so it's likely that more could come, but I'd say the chances of a day-and-date FFXIII to X360 are about as likely as the Wii getting one.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

NINTENDO WILL BE FAR AHEAD IN 2048 SONY WILL BE SECOND I KNOW THE FUTURE

I think Peter Moore was very thoughtful when he initially answered Mario. The Xbox 360 already has a few really good JRPGs and what the system needs is a strong platformer. What better then mario? I wound not be shocked to see an exclusive FF game (one in the main series) on the wii. The wii has a strong presence in Japan and SE likes the balance board.
